Based on the libretto by Adolf Hoffmeister and Vaclava Klimenta Klicpery.

Aninku and Pepicek are a fatherless sister and brother. Their mother is ill, and the doctor tells them she needs milk to recover. But they have no money. They decide to sing in the marketplace, to raise the needed money. But the evil organ grinder Brundibar chases them away. However, with the help of a fearless sparrow, keen cat, and wise dog, and the children of the town, they are able to chase Brundibar away in turn, and sing in the market square.

Angels in America is considered by many to be the seminal play on America at the end of the twentieth century-not the least of which because it features the lawyer Roy Cohn. Cohn, who served as Joseph McCarthy's chief counsel during the Senator's Communist witch hunt that terrorized many in the artistic community and provided the inspiration for Arthur Miller's The Crucible. Cohn also served as the attorney for high-level members of the mafia, and, perhaps most relevant to today's current political environment, worked as Donald Trump's lawyer during the 1970s and 1980s.  (more...)

The children's opera Brundibar was the most popular cultural activity and a powerful symbol of hope when performed by the Jewish people imprisoned in the Terezin Ghetto (Theresienstadt), in Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia. On August 14, the opera will be performed for the first time ever in Sydney, with a production at City Recital Hall which aims to introduce Sydney children to the joys of performing and experiencing opera, as well as introducing them to the lessons of the Holocaust. Geoff Hoyle's LEAR'S SHADOW Extends at The Marsh

The Marsh has announced award-winning actor/playwright Geoff Hoyle's newest solo show Lear's Shadow will extend, with continuing performances through June 27. It may be business-as-usual when great tragedians such as Laurence Olivier, Sir Ian McKellen, and Paul Scofield perform in King Lear, but this time a great clown tackles Shakespeare's masterpiece. Audiences experience King Lear like never before as the Jester (played by Hoyle), recently unemployed, tells his side to Shakespeare's most tragic, cosmic, and human of stories in this poignant solo performance. Lear's Shadow, written in collaboration with and directed by the master of the solo form David Ford, will run Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8pm and Saturdays at 5pm through May 30. Beginning June 4, Lear's Shadow will be performed Thursdays at 8pm and Saturdays at 5pm at The Marsh (1062 Valencia Street, San Francisco).  For tickets ($20-$100), the public may visit www.themarsh.org or call 415-282-3055 between 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday. President Nancy J. Uscher has announced that Cornish College of the Arts will award honorary degrees at this year's commencement to ground-breaking American playwright Tony Kushner and to Deborah F. Rutter, president-elect of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Mr. Kushner is the winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Tony and Emmy Awards, and a recipient of the National Medal for Arts. One of the nation's leading arts administrators, Ms. Rutter assumes leadership of the Kennedy Center in September. Most recently she has served as president of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and, prior to that, she was the executive director of the Seattle Symphony. (more...)
