BWW Review: BAD JEWS, New Alexandra Theatre Birmingham, May 3 2016BWW Review: BAD JEWS, New Alexandra Theatre Birmingham, May 3 2016
by Jenny Ell - May 5, 2016

Family gatherings and occasions are frequently tarnished by disagreements; none more so than at weddings, christenings and funerals when extended families are often brought together. Joshua Harmon's play Bad Jews takes place following a family funeral and an heirloom belonging to the deceased is being fought over. This dark situational comedy is set in a plush studio apartment in Manhattan where cousins are staying overnight amidst the Jewish commemorations following their Grandfather's passing. (more...)

BWW Review: Commedia dell'Arte Meets Political Farce at Portland StageBWW Review: Commedia dell'Arte Meets Political Farce at Portland Stage
by Carla Maria Verdino-SŁllwold - May 2, 2016

Portland Stage closes its season with Dario Fo's 1974 play, They Don't Pay? We Won't Pay!, in the playwright's signature style of provocative socialist politics and broad Commedia dell'Arte farce. Translated from the Italian by Jon Laskin and Michael Aquilante, the Portland production adds an Americanized layer of iconic comedy characters and references to shows such as the Honeymooners. The overall effect alternates between moments of hilarity and wearisome intervals, though one can only admire the virtuoso performances of the entire cast and director Ron Botting's crisp, energetic production. BWW Reviews: THEY DON'T PAY? WE WON'T PAY! at Ambassador TheaterBWW Reviews: THEY DON'T PAY? WE WON'T PAY! at Ambassador Theater
by Hannah Landsberger - Mar 8, 2016

There is little worse than a play that doesn't understand its purpose. They Don't Pay? We Won't Pay!, written by Dario Fo and produced by Ambassador Theater at the Mead Theatre Lab, cannot decide what it wants to be. Instead, the production vacillates between heavy-handed social commentary and overacted comedy. Despite a few strong performances, the production is weighed down by its cumbersome message and leaves the audience confused instead of inspired. (more...)
