BWW Review: Commedia dell'Arte Meets Political Farce at Portland Stage
by Carla Maria Verdino-Sllwold - May 2, 2016

Portland Stage closes its season with Dario Fo's 1974 play, They Don't Pay? We Won't Pay!, in the playwright's signature style of provocative socialist politics and broad Commedia dell'Arte farce. Translated from the Italian by Jon Laskin and Michael Aquilante, the Portland production adds an Americanized layer of iconic comedy characters and references to shows such as the Honeymooners. The overall effect alternates between moments of hilarity and wearisome intervals, though one can only admire the virtuoso performances of the entire cast and director Ron Botting's crisp, energetic production. Untitled Theater Company #61 to Present THE IRON HEEL
by BWW News Desk - Jun 22, 2016

The world premiere of The Iron Heel, an adaptation of Jack London's 1908 novel, will be presented at multiple venues across the city from July 28 - September 5 on the 100th anniversary of his death. The novel is considered to be the first modern dystopian novel, was an inspiration for Orwell's 1984, and was praised in a book review by Leon Trotsky. Written as socialist propaganda, it is the story of an election between a socialist revolutionary and an entrenched oligarch. The oligarch prevails, turning America fascist, and inspiring the Marxist revolution. Set in Jack London's future, 1912 - 1934, its themes nonetheless have obvious relevance during this election season, a century later. (more...)

BWW Review: First Run Theater's Engaging TRICK AND ANOTONIA
by Chris Gibson - Jul 19, 2016

I did some creative work for First Run Theater during their early years, underscoring some shows, and even directing a couple of one acts. I admired the fact that they provided a testing ground, a full staging, of works by local playwrights. That's an opportunity that goes far beyond a staged reading, and actually brings an author's vision to life with an immediacy that's filtered through the talent that presents it. I went back to a theater I hadn't stepped a foot in in years, and saw what I think is one their finest productions, TRICK AND ANOTONIA, written by Jenn Ciavarella. Although it could still use a bit of tightening, its a compelling tale, the actors all do solid work, and Landon Shaw's direction and scenic design is very thoughtfully conceived and executed.
