Iggy Pop Life Class Opens November 4, 2016 at the Brooklyn Museum

In Iggy Pop Life Class, Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller uses the traditional life-model drawing class to stage a performative event with Iggy Pop as model and subject. The resulting drawings, created by twenty-two participating artists, will be shown at the Brooklyn Museum from November 4, 2016, to March 26, 2017. Along with works depicting the male body selected from the Museum's historical collections, the exhibition examines shifting cultural representations of masculinity across history.   (more...)

Writer and actor Modesto 'Flako' Jimenez performs his autobiographical and uncompromising collection of poetry, Oye Para mi Querido Brooklyn (Listen For My Dear Brooklyn.) Hiding out in his abuelita's bathroom, Flako, a young Dominican man, escapes into the memories of losing his culture and self to the gentrified blocks of Bushwick. Oye For My Dear Brooklyn is performed in both English and Spanish through a series of poems, video projections, and music. Lyrical and savage, Flako's poetry is populated with immigrants, drug dealers, condoritos, tiguerasos, mothers and sons, all asking the same question, "What's my moral worth?" (more...)

Cuban Female Artists Showcased in Lowe's Exhibition

The Lowe Art Museum unveils a collection of works by foremost Cuban female artists on November 3, 2016. Titled Unconscious Thoughts Animate the World: Selections from the Shelley and Donald Rubin Private Collection, the exhibition comprises thirty works that span the last five decades of Cuban history and communicate the island-nation's cultural heritage, as well as notions of collective and individual identity. An Opening Reception will be held on November 3 from 7 to 9 pm, with talks by two of the artists from the exhibition, Sandra Ramos and Clara Morera. BWW Review: The Rep's MAN OF LA MANCHA Soars to Inspirational Heights

Everyone eventually wishes for an impossible dream to be fulfilled-In a musical where that song, 'The Impossible Dream,' continues to inspire an audience, Milwaukee Repertory stellar Man of La Mancha opened the final weeks of September and proved why the musical won five 1966 Tony Awards. The first production in the Quadracci Powerhouse season, the iconic musical written by Dale Wasserman combined with brilliant music by Mitch Leigh and lyrics by Joe Darion transforms Cervantes groundbreaking novel into a two hour, no intermission musical set in the dungeons of the 16th century Spanish Inquisition. Cervantes and his servant Sancho Panza must prove their worth to their prison mates. To do so, the pair performs the poet's 'Man of La Mancha' in the Spanish dungeon, where all the prisoners participate as actors, which eventually awakens the impossible dream inside those attending in the audience (more...)

Theatre Coup d'Etat to Present THE CRUCIBLE

Winner of the 1953 Tony Award for Best Play, The Crucible tells the story of a community consumed by fear, hatred, and a lust for power. John Proctor, a well-respected farmer, ends an ill-fated affair with his servant, Abigail. Spurned by the rejection of her first love, Abigail rebels by meeting with other young women to dance and explore the occult in the woods. They are caught, and through their effort to avoid juvenile punishment, the young women are used as a pawns by the fear-mongering patriarchs of the village to steal property from other surrounding landowners like Proctor. Weaponizing biblical teachings, utilizing fear-based rhetoric, and abusing their own political power, the religious leaders drive the community into a panicked frenzy that ultimately condemns 19 innocent men and women to their death. Copious Love Productions Premieres THE UNTITLED PLAY ABOUT ART SCHOOL

When Amy Antonia fails to show up for her thesis presentation and it is blamed on her depression/anxiety, she is threatened with expulsion from Whetmore's College of Performing Arts. Meanwhile, in Ancient Greece, a carnivorous beast has escaped Echo's watchful eye and is hungry for blood. As Echo and Amy's friends continue to betray them and bystanders are devoured, they must decide whether to give up on theatre while they still can, or burn everything to the ground and start over. The Untitled Play About Art School is a very harsh comedy following an unbreakable friendship that tries to find a way to heal when all hope seems lost. (more...)
