MCC Theater Will Break Ground on New Performance Space Later This Month

MCC Theater announced today that it will break ground on its first permanent home on March 22, 2016. Set to open in 2018, the space will unite MCC's diverse roster of programs under one roof for the first time in the company's three-decade history. The new facility will also allow MCC to expand its programming and establish it as a cultural anchor within the Clinton neighborhood. BWW Preview: First Stage Reprises Fantastic HOLES to Open 2016

To begin the new year, First Stage reprises Holes, a 1998 National Book Award Winner (for Young People's Literature) and 1999 Newbery Medal Award novel. Author Louis Sachar eventually transformed his novel into a Theater for Young Audience script, which retains much of the impressive language of the original text. Company Artistic Director Jeff Frank delights in returning the fantasy/mystery story to the Todd Wehr stage while also directing this new production. Originally produced by the company in 2004, HOLES captures themes resonating 11 years later as Frank believes, 'This compelling mystery story, a myth, reverberates over generations.'

SONDHEIM ON SONDHEIM is a multi-media musical revue consisting entirely of the music and lyrics of Stephen Sondheim. It was conceived by James Lapine and had a limited run on Broadway in 2010. It is based on a show produced in 2000 called Moving On that was created by David Kernan. Kernan also created another review of Sondheim material called Side By Side By Sondheim. The show featured narration recorded by Sondheim and had several performances in New York at Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall in 2004, under the title Opening Doors.

 Merged Work Productions (Lead Producers) and Jack Thomas (Executive Producer) announced today that music-world icons and television stars Steven Van Zandt and Paul Shaffer, along with Maureen Van Zandt and Joe Grano (Jersey Boys), have joined the Broadway-bound musical Piece of My Heart: The Bert Berns Story as lead producers.  It was also announced that Mr. Van Zandt will serve as the show's musical director.  Piece of My Heart will open on Broadway in 2016.

In the wake of the attacks on Planned Parenthood and all of the talk about the degradation of Women's Rights, Curio Theatre Company opens its 11th Season with the Philadelphia Premiere of a one-woman adaptation of Margaret Atwood's dystopian masterpiece of speculative fiction, The Handmaid's Tale. This adaptation by Joseph Stollenwerk begins previews October 15, opens Friday October 23 at 8 p.m. and closes November 14. Curio shows runs on a Thursday, Friday, Saturday at 8 p.m. schedule.
