SOUND OFF: GLEE Goes Horror Show

This week we are taking a listen to the soundtrack for the forthcoming ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW homage ala GLEE with a rundown of the second season of the hit Golden Globe-winning musical dramedy series and how it stacks up to last season. Additionally, we take a peek at one of the most famous musicals numbers from the cult classic score - 'Time Warp' featuring all of the central Glee club cast-members of the show, among them Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Dianna Agron and Chris Colfer. The soundtrack also contains a special appearance by John Stamos - late of Broadway's recent Bye Bye Birdie, and the other Roundabout revivals of NINE and CABARET - who sings the song made famous by a then unknown Meat Loaf in 1975 who will be making an appearance himself on the episode when it airs October 26th on Fox. Mutrux's BABY, IT'S YOU Musical Gets New Producers

Variety reports today that the biographical musical about composer Florence Greenberg by Million Dollar Quartet producer and book writer Floyd Mutrux is being prepped for a 2011 Broadway opening. Entitled Baby, It's You, the musical is aiming to open in the winter of 2011, co- directed by Mutrux and Sheldon Epps. Mutrux and Epps also collaborated on the Pasadena Playhouse production in November of 2009. The show premiered at the Coast Playhouse in Los Angeles prior to its Pasadena run. (more...)

Bay Area Cabaret Reopens Fairmont Venetian Room

Bay Area Cabaret, the local organization devoted to presenting audiences with top performers who expand the definition of cabaret, announced it has been invited to reopen the Fairmont Hotel's historic Venetian Room as a showroom, and given exclusive music booking rights to present its musical series in the city's legendary showroom. Said Marilyn Levinson, Founding Executive Producer of Bay Area Cabaret, now in its seventh season, 'The Venetian Room reigned supreme as America's premier supper club from 1947 to 1989. It was here that Tony Bennett introduced his signature song 'I Left My Heart in San Francisco' and show business legends like Ella Fitzgerald, Marlene Dietrich, Tina Turner, Joel Grey, Bobby Short, James Brown, Vic Damone, Nat 'King' Cole, and many, many other performers held forth for more than four decades. Stage and screen icon Dick Van Dyke will appear onstage at the Geffen Playhouse in Dick Van Dyke - Step in Time! - A Musical Memoir, a world premiere production that highlights the artist's truly scrumptious six-decades in the entertainment industry. The play, which is co-written by Van Dyke and the play's director Joshua Ravetch, is a living autobiography pulling stories and songs from Van Dyke's celebrated career. To help bring the show to life with music, Van Dyke will be joined on stage by Eric Bradley, Bryan Chadima and Mike Mendyke - three young singers who together with Van Dyke form the singing quartet 'The Vantastix.' Step in Time, named for Richard and Robert Sherman's song and Van Dyke's signature dance number in Mary Poppins, will begin in the intimate Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater at the Geffen Playhouse with previews on December 8, 2010. The Facebook page for the new Broadway musical, THE BOOK OF MORMON has revealed the artwork for the highly anticipated Spring premiere. THE BOOK OF MORMON, a new original musical comedy from 'South Park' creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone and Avenue Q composer and co-creator Robert Lopez, will open on Broadway on Thursday, March 24, 2011 at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre (230 West 49th Street). The world premiere will be choreographed by three-time Tony Award-nominee Casey Nicholaw (Monty Python's Spamalot, The Drowsy Chaperone) and co-directed by Nicholaw and Trey Parker. O que poderia escrever um crítico de arte estando cara a cara com a MONALISA no Museu do Louvre? E um crítico literário analisando os defeitos e as qualidades de OS MAIAS de Eça de Queiroz? Um crítico de música teria como criticar a NONA de Bethoven? Pois é. Seria muita pretensão. Essas divagações associadas à crítica de um espetaculo de Teatro Musical, ou melhor de um musical da Broadway de 40 anos de idade, montado e interpretado por brasileiros em 2010, pode parecer uma GRANDE E DESPROPORCIONAL tolice. Mas não é. O HAIR de Claudio Botelho e Charles Möeller só estreou há dois dias mas, podem acreditar, já entrou para a História. História de uma manifestação teatral ou de uma 'preferencia', vamos assim definir o musical, que no Brasil teve uma penosa trajetória para os que faziam de suas vidas uma sacrificada 'defesa' (no sentido jurídico da palavra) do genero, argumentando, tentando explicar ao pai, a mãe, aos vizinhos (numa era que INTERNET bem poderia ser o nome esquisito de um inferninho em Copacabana) o 'porque' de se amar uma coisa tão descabida, esquisita e 'suspeita'.Eu, por exemplo, não tenho pejo em dizer, saía muitas vezes da minha casa em Laranjeiras, às quatro da manhã das terças feiras, para esperar ansioso na Banca da General Osório a kombi que trazia, de uma 'tacada', o VARIETY e o NEW YORK TIMES de domingo, que ia, num gesto de desmedida alienação todo para o lixo, com excessão é claro do suplemento ARTS & LEISURE que era folheado e refolheado durante por toda a semana. Isso até a proxima madrugada de terça feira chegar. E os Lps? Biblioteca do IBEU!!!! Quantas vezes THE MUSIC MAN, Bye Bye Birdie e OLIVER sumiam do grande arquivo cheio de gavetões e as multas à uma simpática bibliotecária, chegavam a abalar o orçamento doméstico. Depois veio a 'portinha' de uma loja chamada MODERN SOUND, que era mesmo moderna: vendia,acreditem ou não, musicais da Broadway!!! Nesta época o CD poderia tambem ser o título de uma ópera rock, pois simplesmente não existia em nenhum dicionário (e desconfio, materialmente, no mundo). Tempos mágicos para nós eram aqueles, que seríamos bem capazes de esbofetear uma bisavó se ela ousasse falar mal de MINHA QUERIDA LADY ou de IRMA LA DOUCE. (more...)

Kate Shindle (Legally Blonde), John Arthur Greene (West Side Story), and Matt Doyle (Bye Bye Birdie) will join host Marti Gould Cummings for this year's 2nd Annual A Very MARY Holiday benefit on Monday, November 29 at Dixon Place at 8:00pm. The starry holiday benefit raises money and awareness for The Ali Forney Center and their programs. This year, A Very MARY Holiday will add a new element of the program, presenting the Broadway Speaks OUT! Hero Award to a member of the Broadway community who continues to be an incomparable and unwavering supporter of LGBT rights and the equality of all. Tony Award Winner and current star of Broadway's WOMEN ON THE VERGE, Laura Benanti (Gypsy, In the Next Room, Nine) has been chosen as this year's Broadway Speaks OUT!
