Staff Spotlight: Joy Magyawe, House Manager at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre
by Robert Diamond - Feb 14, 2011

Q: Give us a brief background of your career leading up to house managing at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre. A: I moved to New York City in 1995 to attend New York University - Tisch School of the Arts for Dance. During my freshman year, I began ushering at the Joyce Theatre, where I began my career in front of house management. After many front of house positions at the Joyce Theatre, I was relocated downtown to assist in the opening of their smaller theatre and rehearsal space, Joyce SoHo. In 2003, I left to open the Biltmore Theatre (now the Friedman Theatre) as the Assistant House Manager. During my three years at the Biltmore, I was also the Development and Marketing Coordinator for Celebrate Brooklyn!. During my 5 years at Celebrate Brooklyn!, one of my accomplishments was taking their membership program from about 40 to over 300. They have since doubled that number, making the summer festival an ongoing success. While also continuing to maintain a performance career, I learned that another new theatre, The Times Center, was opening. I jumped at the opportunity to open another event space. The Times Center was my first green space. While at The Times Center, there was a program about Roundabout Theatre Company opening the first green Broadway theatre space, the Henry Miller's Theatre. I had already known that several of my past co-workers had moved to Roundabout and decided I would inquire if they had hired a house manager. Fifteen years later and I've been a part of opening two Broadway Theatres, a small dance rehearsal/performance space, an event space and the revival of a summer festival.

BWW Interviews: Kalen Allmandinger, one of the "Blue Men" in Blue Man Group at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre, January 18 - 23.
by Joseph Harrison - Jan 9, 2011

If you have heard of Blue Man Group or experienced one of their previous productions or tours, you know how unique and exciting their world famous productions can be. Filled with experiences that defy categorization, Blue Man Group is best known for multi-media performances that feature three bald and blue characters who take the audience on a journey that is funny, intelligent and visually stunning. When the latest tour arrives at the Fabulous Fox Theatre January 18 - 23, however, Atlanta audiences, even those who have experienced the Blue phenomenon, are in for something new and exciting. Featuring classic moments and brand new content, this first theatrical production to tour North America is sure to please. The "Blue Men" are usually men of few (or more accurately, no) words, but I got one of them, Kalen Allmandinger, a veteran Blue Man, to speak long enough to tell me a little about himself, this exciting new production and why audiences of all ages are in for a real treat.

North Coast Rep Presents HOW DO YOU SPELL CHANNUKAH 12/3-5
by BWW News Desk - Dec 3, 2010

What is Hanukkah... or Chanukkah? How do you really spell it, anyway? What's it ever done for me and why should I care? Hash it out (a nice lean kosher hash) with our hosts Marc and Doug for a unique evening of fun and music and story telling. We'll share, we'll kibitz, we'll have a little something to eat! Sure, go see A CHRISTMAS CAROL, (we're going to be on their set... how ironic if that?) but do yourself a favor and spend a little time this year spinning the dreidel with Marc and Doug. Who knows, maybe we'll even learn something about all this holiday mishagas. Maybe, maybe not... you put 3 Jews in a room together you get 5 different opinions. So...what can I tell you, we'll see what happens, but even if we don't solve any baffling Jewish mysteries...we'll have a lot of fun not getting anywhere together. Oy! Did we mention that we'll have a little nosh?

Modern Music Masters: Nellie McKay
by Robert Diamond - Oct 3, 2010

Today we begin a new comprehensive academic music discussion series on BroadwayWorld in which I speak to the most cutting-edge artists in the recording industry, on Broadway and in Hollywood about their influences and experiences in the industry with an emphatic emphasis on the songwriting process itself and what drives and inspires it. While these discussions may be on occasion only tangentially theatre-related, the insights provided by the various participants is a demonstrative way in which to illuminate perhaps the most mysterious of all the arts: music. Peering into the psyche of the composer and lyricist, we may begin to understand what the craft of composition and lyric-writing is all about and why musical theatre tends to attract the most talented and innovative songwriters, both in the twentieth-century and today (as this column proves).

BWW Reviews: Theatre Out's ZANNA DON'T! is Candy-Colored Fun
by Michael L. Quintos - Jul 6, 2010

What do you get when you grab a bunch of perky high school students and have them all magically fall in love while putting together the school musical, all while wearing bright, rainbow colored-preppy wear? If you said High School Musical, then you're... well, okay, you're right. But actually, the same description can be applied to another high school-set musical fairy tale-this one, though, has a particularly significant difference. This one is called ZANNA DON'T!, the latest production at Orange County's Theatre Out now playing through July 31. The Gay and Lesbian Theater group's revival of the 2003 off-Broadway show (which featured Queer Eye's Jai Rodriguez in the original title role) sprinkles this high school musical with a lot of winks, twinks, and plenty of sequin-accented costumes.
