1959 was a very good year for Jeff Harnar. It was the year the future cabaret star was born, but he couldn't know then that 1959 would also provide him with the material for what would eventually become one of his greatest cabaret performances. In 1991, for his second major engagement as a cabaret artist, Harnar made his debut at the famed Oak Room at the Algonquin with a show called THE 1959 BROADWAY SONGBOOK, featuring tunes from 21 musicals (including West Side Story, Gypsy, Fiorello, The Music Man, My Fair Lady, Li'l Abner, and Flower Drum Song), that either opened or were still running that year. Directed by Sara Louise Lazarus with musical direction from pianist Alex Rybeck, Harnar's show strung together iconic Broadway songs into an imaginary musical with commentaries on love, marriage and politics, complete with an overture, entr'acte, intermission, and curtain call. The show and Harnar's performance (which would be filmed for a PBS special in 1993) drew raves from the New York entertainment press.

Happy Birthday, Charles Strouse! Strouse's first Broadway musical was the 1960 hit Bye Bye Birdie, with lyrics by Lee Adams, who would become his long time collaborator. Following this was Golden Boy (1964, also with Adams), starring Sammy Davis, Jr. and It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Superman (1966, based on the popular comic strip) which introduced the song 'You've Got Possibilities' sung by Linda Lavin. In 1970, Applause (starring Lauren Bacall, with book by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, and lyrics by Adams) won Strouse his second Tony Award. In 1977, Strouse adapted another comic strip for the stage, creating the hit Annie, which garnered him his third Tony Award and two Grammy Awards. Other Strouse musicals include Charlie and Algernon (1979), Dance a Little Closer (1983, with lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner), Rags (1986), Nick & Nora (1993), and An American Tragedy (1995, with lyrics by David Shaber).
The Other Side is a compilation of songs that are true stories about overcoming struggles and offer the listener understanding and hope.

When the foreign correspondent Paul Watson snapped a grisly photo in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1993, he'd receive both a prize and a curse. He got a Pulitzer Prize for capturing the awful moment of the body of a soldier being dragged and desecrated down a side street, but also heard a imagined voice from the dead soldier that haunted him ever since.

Oh, for the love of God, we get it, we get it: The superwomen – who might best be described as the superheroines of Nashville's theaterati and assorted non-stagey types – of SuperMAS love each other, admire each other's mad musical theater skills and get along as well as a bunch of Canadians trying to out-courteous one another! But just imagine how much fun it would be if the quintet of superior performers could somehow show us the seamy underbelly of their interactions and artistic collaborations, exposing us to the histrionics of the Real Housewives reality of their relationships…complete with overturned tables, repeated air kisses and trips to faraway lands where they redefine the term “ugly Americans.”
Hayley Mullins, Northern Kentucky resident and illustrator of Blue Blue Sea Finds His Cape, attended a book signing at Turfway Park in Florence, Kentucky, on April 3, 2016, from 3:00-6:00 pm. Mullins offered to sign books and had copies signed by her and the author of the book, Miranda N. Prather, for sale. The signing took place during Turfway's closing day that featured live racing, Dachshund and small dog racing and a raffle for a bottle of Maker's Mark Bourbon autographed by Cincinnati Reds' legend, Johnny Bench.
Mary Troilo, National Simulcast Director at Turfway Park, set up the event and stated that, 'there was a crowd of people at the table so I feel there was a lot of interest' when she had some time to walk by the signing. In addition, Theosa Hoffeld, a fan of Blue Blue Sea, drove up for the event and had hoped to meet Prather in addition to Mullins. She said it was wonderful to meet Mullins and that 'Blue Blue Sea's legacy will live forever in this book.'
Blue Blue Sea Finds His Cape tells the life story of a blue-collar racehorse who overcame a devastating illness to survive and inspire thousands around the globe who were facing their own struggles. The book features playful writing and delightful pictures that bring the tale of Blue Blue Sea to life. Blue Blue Sea was no American Pharoah, but he became a hero just the same!
Hayley Mullins resides in Erlanger, Kentucky, where she is a high school senior at Heritage Academy. She is a self-taught artist, who is gaining a following due to her natural talent for catching a subject in whimsical ways. Upon graduation, the illustrator plans to attend Lipscomb University and study Visual Development and Animation.
Miranda N. Prather lived in Northern Kentucky from 1983 to 1993, when her family moved from New Orleans, LA, to Independence, KY. In Kentucky, Prather attended Kenton Elementary, Twenhofel Middle School and graduated from Simon Kenton High School. During her time in Kentucky, the author took horseback riding lessons and owned another off-track Thoroughbred named Beble.
Shoofly View Publications published Blue Blue Sea Finds His Cape in late 2015. Since the book's release the company has been impressed with the success of the book and are looking forward to publishing more volumes in the series.

Turfway Park has a long history of delighting horse racing enthusiasts in the Northern Kentucky area. In fact, Prather recalls watching races when she was growing up there, and now, Mullins does the same. The track is renowned for its history of innovation while keeping the traditions of the Sport of Kings alive and well in the Bluegrass State. In addition, Turfway Park has been a leader in Thoroughbred aftercare, first establishing a surrender stall in 2008 and later implementing the Turfway Aftercare Program, which funds Kentucky-based accredited retraining and rehoming facilities.

Let's take a trip back in time, shall we? The year was 1993 (or '94, or '95....'96?), I was 7 (or 8, or 9...10?) years old, and my parents took my sister and me to the Three Little Bakers dinner theater in Wilmington, Delaware, where 'Fiddler On The Roof' was playing. Unfortunately, I don't remember much about this experience other than that it was the first time I ever had a Shirley Temple, the waitress made me cry, and the line for the prime rib buffet was very long. This was, however, the first time those famous first strains of Jerry Bock's violin solo entered the back of my brain and psyche, and never left. Over the next several years, Fiddler lightly weaved its way in and out of my life: the occasional off key rendition of 'Sunrise, Sunset' at Jewish Community North, catching the film on AMC, and that community theatre production that my synagogue's men's club brought their families to (ironically enough, the girl playing Hodel ended up being my prom date). While at Juilliard, my best friend, Scott and I saw the 2004 revival together TWICE. Once with Alfred Molina, and another time with Harvey Fierstein and Rosie O'Donnell. For over a decade, it's been part of our rotation of inside jokes to cast Tevye and Golde with obscure and asinine choices of actors, then perform 'Do You Love Me', impersonating said actors (Keanu Reaves as Tevye and Paula Deen as Golde, anyone?). As an American suburban Jewish kid growing up in the late '90s/early 00's, Fiddler was just part of the narrative -- Chinese Food on Christmas.

-This summer marks another historic milestone for the annual Bard SummerScape festival. For the first time since its founding, this season's focus is on the music and culture of Italy, with seven weeks of music, opera, theater, dance, film, and cabaret keyed to the theme of the 27th Bard Music Festival, "Puccini and His World." This intensive examination of the life and times of Giacomo Puccini opens a window onto Italy's rich musical heritage from Palestrina to Menotti, by way of the most popular and successful - yet, paradoxically, frequently critically underrated - opera composer of all time. Complementing the music festival, some of the Tuscan master's most compelling compatriots provide other key SummerScape highlights.

Complementing the music festival, some of the Tuscan master's most compelling compatriots provide other key SummerScape highlights. These include a rare, fully staged production of Iris, a forerunner of Madama Butterfly by Puccini's close contemporary Pietro Mascagni; the world premiere of Demolishing Everything with Amazing Speed, four newly unearthed puppet plays from leading Italian Futurist Fortunato Depero, as reimagined by Dan Hurlin;the world premiere of Fantasque, a new ballet set to the music of Respighi and Rossini by John Heginbotham and Amy Trompetter; a film series on "Puccini and the Operatic Impulse in Cinema"; and the return of Bard's authentic and sensationally popularSpiegeltent, hosted by the inimitable Mx. Justin Vivian Bond. Taking place between July 1 and August 14 in the Frank Gehry-designed Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts and other venues on Bard College's stunning Hudson River campus, SummerScape's 2016 offerings provide new opportunities to discover that, as Time Out New York puts it, "the experience of entering the Fisher Center and encountering something totally new is unforgettable and enriching."
