Mary J. Davis will present DISASTER! written by Seth Rudetsky and Jack Plotnick, at St. Luke's Theatre starting on October 14, opening Monday, November 4. DISASTER! is a musical based on 1970's disaster movies with a score consisting of 1970's pop, rock and disco hit songs. Directed by Jack Plotnick, choreographed by Denis Jones and music direction by Larry Pressgrove. Disaster! previously ran in 2012.

Northrop at the University of Minnesota announces single tickets go on-sale today, August 5 for its 2013-14 Northrop Season, which features world-class dance, including copresentations with The O'Shaughnessy at St. Catherine University's Women of Substance and Walker Art Center. Big Star tribute concerts in Chicago and New York are taking place this weekend, featuring Jody Stephens, the band's sole surviving original member & drummer, in anticipation of the film's release (more info. here). The film's soundtrack was just released this week via Omnivore Recordings.

Roulette presents The Whammies. This all-star combination features critically acclaimed improvisers from the Chicago, Boston and Amsterdam improvisation scenes, in particular 70-year old Dutch drum icon Han Bennink. The focus will be on legendary soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy's early compositions from the 1970's, a particularly fruitful period during his life in Paris. The line-up is Jorrit Dijkstra (Amsterdam/Boston), Pandelis Karayorgis (Boston), Jeb Bishop (Chicago), Nate McBride (Chicago), Mary Oliver (Amsterdam), and Han Bennink (Amsterdam). The group plays colorful renditions of well-known Lacy tunes such as Bone, As Usual, and Dutch Masters, and some of his more conceptual and experimental works such as The Wire, Ducks, and The Precipitation Suite. Violinist Mary Oliver joins the quintet for a selection of compositions and improvisations.

The five-day production is the first of a series of summer programming in the 70-foot tall, 22,000 square foot temperature-controlled tent along the scenic Chicago River. Joining The Twelve Tenors, as the Thirteenth Tenor, on opening night, tonight, May 30, is Chicago's own TV personality and host of the wildly popular radio show, "Mr. Fix It," is Lou Manfredini. Manfredini will sing several songs with the famous group throughout the evening.
