National New Play Network, the country's alliance of nonprofit theaters that champions the development, production, and continued life of new plays, announces its 2017-18 grant recipients, including the 2017 Smith Prize for Political Theatre, seven Producer Residencies, and five Collaboration Fund awards that will support partnerships between multiple Member Theaters, playwrights, and other theater makers in various projects.

The Connecticut premiere of Trav'lin - The 1930s Harlem Musical opens this weekend at Waterbury's Seven Angels Theatre, following productions at Houston's Ensemble Theatre and Fort Worth's Jubilee Theatre, and development in Washington, D.C. and New York City, including a sold-out run at the New York Musical Festival (NYMF).  Performances being Thursday, May 11, Official Opening is Saturday, May 13, and the show runs through Sunday, June 11, 2017.

KODO Returns to U.S. in 22-City Tour, 1/26-3/25

Kodo — the  world's most celebrated masters of Japanese percussion, who played a singular role in popularizing modern taiko drumming — will present their program DADAN in North America for the first time, visiting 22 U.S. cities between January and March 2017.  Forging new directions for the traditional Japanese drum, Kodo will bring a display of their raw athleticism and rhythmic mastery back to the U.S. with this cutting-edge and ever-evolving production featuring the men of Kodo in a bold portrayal of the essence of drumming through this vibrant living art form.  2017 tour highlights include stops at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, Chicago's Symphony Center the Smith Center in Las Vegas and BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music) in New York City.  Complete schedule below.
