This February, for Black History Month, American Masters profiles two iconic performers who broke new ground in entertainment as the Civil Rights movement gathered momentum in America: Sammy Davis, Jr., and Charley Pride. American Masters – Sammy Davis, Jr.: I've Gotta Be Me, the first major film documentary to examine the performer's vast career and journey for identity through the shifting tides of civil rights and racial progress during 20th-century America, premieres nationwide Tuesday, February 19 at 9:00 p.m. ET on PBS (check local listings) and is available on DVD the same day through PBS Distribution. The PBS broadcast also features 20 minutes of exclusive bonus performance footage spanning Davis' 50-year career after the documentary. American Masters – Charley Pride: I'm Just Me premieres nationwide Friday, February 22 at 9:00 p.m. ET on PBS (check local listings). Both films will be available to stream the day after their respective broadcast premieres viapbs.org/americanmasters and PBS apps.

Sundance Institute will gather 20 celebrated and revered expert voices across film, art, culture and science to award feature-length and short films shown at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival with 12 prizes, announced at a ceremony February 2 that will be livestreamed at sundance.org and on YouTube. Short Film Awards will be announced at a separate ceremony on January 29 and will also be livestreamed. The Festival takes place January 24 through February 3 in Park City, Salt Lake City and Sundance, Utah.

Duck Soup Cinema, Overture Center's silent film series that celebrates the heritage of the Capitol Theater, returns on Saturday, Jan. 19 with two screenings of Ella Cinders at 2 and 7 p.m. This is the first screening of Ella Cinders as part of Duck Soup Cinema.

Uncovering the lives and works of four groundbreaking visual artists, American Masters presents an "Artists Flight" of new documentaries, premiering Fridays, August 31-September 14 on PBS (check local listings). Four films tell the stories of four artists: Eva Hesse, the 1960s art world icon who changed art history and women's place in the picture; New York contemporary art maverick Elizabeth Murray; painter Andrew Wyeth, one of America's most popular, but least understood, artists; and Jean-Michel Basquiat, the New York graffiti artist turned '80s art world rock star who died 30 years ago (August 12, 1988). New Dance Alliance is pleased to announce the lineup for the 32nd annual Performance Mix Festival. “The most elaborate festival of the unpredictable” (The New York Times), the 2018 edition brings together more than 30 artists with diverse approaches to performance, inviting audiences to engage with the unexpected and to experience some of the newest voices in experimental dance. This year's festival also includes Performance Mix's annual community breakfast, a free movement workshop, and other special events. The festival runs June 7?10, 2018, at The Performance Project at University Settlement. Performance Mix is curated by New Dance Alliance Founder and Director Karen Bernard.

Puppets galore descend upon Centaur Theatre as world renowned puppeteer provocateur, Ronnie Burkett, makes his Centaur debut with over 40 hand-crafted marionettes for the Quebec premiere of The Daisy Theatre, playing February 20 to March 24, 2018. Montreal's Festival de Casteliers will include The Daisy Theatre as part of its programming along with a post-show talkback following the March 8th performance.

Actors from Guillotine Theatre will read a potpourri of poems, short stories, and reminiscences including Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus, a selection from A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, and A Visit from St. Nicholas. 'A Christmas Medley' will also include works by Langston Hughes, John Julius Norwich, Frank O'Connor, Lillian Smith, Moss Hart, Frederick Douglass, U.A. Fanthorpe, and William Shakespeare.

Great Music at St. Bart's, the concert series produced by the Mid-Manhattan Performing Arts Foundation (MMPAF), for the past seven years has presented music in St. Bartholomew's Church, a parish of the Episcopal Diocese of New York located in the heart of midtown Manhattan. The magnificent 1918 Romanesque-style church features a portal designed by Stanford White and a grand Byzantine-style interior and two of New York's unlikely but outstanding concert spaces: the 150-seat chapel, an intimate and acoustically brilliant space that is perfectly suited for contemporary chamber music, and the majestic 1,000-seat sanctuary outfitted with comfortable chairs enabling flexible seating whose Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ is the largest in New York City and one of the finest examples of the American Classic Organ in the U.S.

Leonard Bernstein was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts. He took piano lessons as a boy and attended the Garrison and Boston Latin Schools. At Harvard University, he studied with Walter Piston, Edward Burlingame-Hill, and A. Tillman Merritt, among others. Before graduating in 1939, he made an unofficial conducting debut with his own incidental music to 'The Birds,' and directed and performed in Marc Blitzstein's 'The Cradle Will Rock.' Then at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, he studied piano with Isabella Vengerova, conducting with Fritz Reiner, and orchestration with Randall Thompson.
