Ballesteros Shine in Sibling Rivalry at Sterling's
by Don Grigware - Sep 13, 2011

On Sunday September 11 Cristina and Matthew Ballestero, real-life siblings, presented their first cabaret Sibling Rivalry @ Sterling's Upstairs at Vitello's to a packed house of screaming fans. Both Cristina and Matthew were in LA's Next Great Stage Star 2011 and came exceedingly close to being runners-up. Each has a distinct personality and an enormous talent...and those talents are every bit as different as their personas. Combined there was enough energy to blow the roof off Vitello's. Cristina's voice has a tremendous range, but she is concentrating her efforts in the pop field; Matthew has a big bold baritone/tenor instrument that is perfectly suited to Broadway standards. American Century Theatre Presents STAGE DOOR, 4/13
by BWW News Desk - Mar 14, 2011

Dynamic writing duo Edna Ferber (the author of Show Boat) and George S. Kaufman (coauthor of The Man Who Came to Dinner, You Can't Take It with You, and other hit comedies) brought high comedy and laughter to American audiences in the 1930s with their witty, stylish hits Stage Door, The Royal Family, and Dinner at Eight. Stage Door was a huge Broadway success in 1936 at the Music Box Theatre (staged by Kaufman) and was made into a star-studded Hollywood movie featuring a young Katherine Hepburn. The play, however, is rarely done in modern times because of the large cast. A magnificent vehicle for theatre actresses, Stage Door is the kind of seldom-produced classic comedy that The American Century Theater was created to produce-and will be presenting in April of 2011. Lennon Sisters a Delight at Welk Theatre in Escondido
by Don Grigware - Feb 5, 2011

For those of us who watched The Lawrence Welk Show regularly every Saturday night from December 1955 through 1967, The Lennon Sisters were the darlings of the airwaves. Here was a quartet of singers - Dianne, Peggy, Kathy and Janet - emanating sweetness and beautifully balanced harmony, who catapulted to stardom mainly through these weekly TV appearances. They did have success with a recording of 'Tonite You Belong To Me', but it was primarily TV and Mr. Welk, as they still so politely refer to him, that gave them their big break. Now, 55 years later, Dianne and Peggy have retired, leaving Kathy and Janet and their younger sister Mimi, who joined them in the late 90s, as a trio. They look terrific and sound better than ever.
