Chicago is a sassy and satirical musical set in the roaring twenties of Chicago. It tells the story of Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly, two murderesses vying for fame and acquittal during a time obsessed with media sensationalism.
The plot revolves around Roxie, a housewife who kills her cheating lover and seeks the help of a cunning lawyer, Billy Flynn, to manipulate the justice system and turn her into a celebrity. Velma, a vaudeville star already convicted for her crime, sees Roxie as a threat to her fading spotlight. The musical unfolds through a series of sharp dialogues, witty lyrics, and dazzling jazz-inspired choreography, all delivered with a healthy dose of cynicism and dark humor.
Chicago is a celebrated musical, having held the record for the longest-running American musical on Broadway until surpassed by The Phantom of the Opera. It has garnered numerous awards throughout its history, including Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Revival of a Musical, and Best Choreography. This February for Black History Month, the Louis Armstrong House Museum will honor the most influential band in jazz history, Louis Armstrong and His Hot Five through its new exhibit: Hotter Than That - 90 Years of Louis Armstrong and His Hot Five. The Hot Five began recording in November 1925 but really hit their stride with their records of February 1926, including hits such as 'Heebie Jeebies' and 'Cornet Chop Suey.'
San Francisco Opera General Director David Gockley and Music Director Nicola Luisotti today announced the Company's 2016–17 Season repertory and roster of international guest artists, conductors and creative teams scheduled to appear at the War Memorial Opera House, as well as initial programming for SF Opera Lab 2017 presentations at the Diane B. Carlo Rizzi is ready to enter an exciting period of work in the New Year. The conductor's 2015/16 season continues in January with a return to the Lyric Opera of Chicago for Matthew Ozawa's new production of Verdi's Nabucco. He heads to Milan the following month to begin rehearsals for Teatro alla Scala's eagerly awaited staging of Umberto Giordano's La cena delle beffe, an opera not seen at La Scala for eight decades. Rizzi's rich schedule also includes the world premiere of Iain Bell's In Parenthesis and the double-bill of Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci, staged to celebrate the 70th birthday of Welsh National Opera (WNO).

The New York Philharmonic will present Rachmaninoff: A Philharmonic Festival, tonight, November 10-28, 2015, featuring 24-year-old Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov performing three of the composer's piano concertos and the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini over the course of three consecutive all-Rachmaninoff programs, each led by a different conductor: Cristian Macelaru (in his Philharmonic debut), Neeme Jarvi, and Ludovic Morlot.

The historical tale delves into 1926 Chicago and the turbulent times of that post war decade. With captivating characters, a keep-you-guessing plot, and detailed historical information, Russo takes you through a realistic depiction of the life and struggle of her heroine during the period. The Cavellis are a large, hard-working, Italian immigrant family-not unlike Russo's own family as both her maternal and paternal grandparents came to America in the 1920's.
'As a child, I loved to hear stories from my Nonna's era. I have a picture of my grandparents-she's wearing a cloche hat and rolled stockings, and he's wearing the popular straw boater,' says Russo. 'I always thought the 1920's was an interesting and important time for women. We finally got the vote in 1920-after only petitioning Congress for a little over a hundred years. And then hemlines went up and stockings rolled down, brazen witness to the fact the modern woman-gasp-wasn't wearing a corset. The road to equality was a long one and it started back then.' Russo, speaker/lecturer and former English and writing teacher, is in the process of completing her fifth book, the last book in a four-book deal with Wild Rose Press.
