BWW EXCLUSIVE: 5 SONGS BY... Michael Friedman On THE FORTRESS OF SOLITUDEBWW EXCLUSIVE: 5 SONGS BY... Michael Friedman On THE FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE
by Pat Cerasaro - Jun 30, 2015

Today we are continuing the 5 SONGS BY... series by talking to a noted composer of many Off-Broadway musicals and special events including Saved, THE BLUE DEMON, IN THE BUBBLE and more all about his latest musical offering, the Itamar Moses collaboration THE FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE. Based on the celebrated novel of the same name by Jonathan Lethem, THE FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE provided Friedman with rich dramatic fodder with which to craft a spectacular musical score overflowing with melody and displaying a wide swath of influences befitting of the coming of age story and 1970s milieu, ranging from traditional musical theatre to rock, pop, R&B, rap, world music and beyond, which he describes in detail via his personally chosen selections from the show in today's show-focused discussion. BWW Feature: Broadway Knows how to Celebrate Birthdays; 10 Birthday Showtunes!BWW Feature: Broadway Knows how to Celebrate Birthdays; 10 Birthday Showtunes!
by Matt Tamanini - Jun 29, 2015

My birthday this year took on extra significance, as the Supreme Court of the United States selected that day to rule that all people had an equal and unalienable right to marry whomever they wanted, regardless of gender. While normally a day to indulge in extreme selfishness, I am quite pleased to cede the importance of June 26th from a celebration of my birth to that of love and compassion for all people. Hopefully Derek Jeter, Ariana Grande, Nick Offerman, Aubrey Plaza, and Chris O'Donnell are all on board as well. Despite long considering myself a LGBTQ ally, I am now going to turn this feature back to being about my birthday (because I already had the songs chosen before SCOTUS ruled). So, this month, I am taking over sole duties that I normally share with Jeff Walker, and composing a list of 10 showtunes all about births and birthdays. Feel free to chime in on Twitter (@BWWMatt) or in the comments below with any others you would like to add to the list. (more...)

BWW Reviews: LES MISERABLES at Casa MananaBWW Reviews: LES MISERABLES at Casa Manana
by Kyle West - Jun 25, 2015

My first experience with LES MISERABLES was in 1996, as a tween performing in my school's musical review. While most other kids learned the material and moved on, I Saved my pennies for the cast recording, memorizing the show word-for-word. After moving to New York in 2004, my work provided me with virtually unlimited tickets to the city's hottest shows. By the time LES MISERABLES returned to Broadway (in 2006, with a carbon-copy revival of the original production that had closed three years previously), I was a jaded New York twenty-something, no longer inspired by the 'tourist trap' hits. Then, as I sat in the darkened Broadhurst Theatre, the turntable moved, and I realized I was watching an unparalleled piece of theatre history. (more...)

SOUND OFF Special Edition: 10 Elegant Solutions For A New Norma Desmond In SUNSET BOULEVARDSOUND OFF Special Edition: 10 Elegant Solutions For A New Norma Desmond In SUNSET BOULEVARD
by Pat Cerasaro - Jul 15, 2015

With breaking news arising late last week of Glenn Close being considered for a return to her Tony Award-winning role in Andrew Lloyd Webber, Don Black and Christopher Hampton's Tony Award-winning Best Musical SUNSET BOULEVARD as well as the show's anniversary of its original West End world premiere opening on July 12, now is an absolutely opportune time to turn back the clock to 1993 and see what precisely makes SUNSET BOULEVARD so spectacular - and muse on some of the major talent that could bring the type of big-time attention that would warrant a major revival of the musical, whether on Broadway, the West End or even the silver screen. Given that the original Billy Wilder film was penned with Gloria Swanson in mind and ultimately became a roman a clef of sorts for the unique star as well as considering the sordid history of original lead Patti LuPone and her odyssey in starring in the show, not to mention the victorious and memorable highs achieved by the leading ladies who have headlined the show - which, post-Close, included Betty Buckley, Rita Moreno, Diahann Carroll, Elaine Paige and more - the role is ripe for a star of epic proportions to introduce one of Andrew Lloyd Webber's most acclaimed musicals to a new generation. And, the time is now. The possibilities are virtually endless, but here are some particularly delectable ideas as we begin to consider who would be absolutely ideal for a new Norma Desmond fit for 2015. (more...)
