by Jacqueline Bublitz - May 9, 2016

We're going to be talking about this one for a long time to come. Right? That ending. That slap. That lonely walk and that promise of another beginning, right at the end. by BWW News Desk - May 7, 2016

Growing up on the south side of Chicago, Caesar thought playing the guitar was his life's calling. Held at the culturally diverse Symphony Space on the Upper West Side on April 30th 2016, the 6th Edition of the Valentina Kozlova International Ballet Competition showcased a bounty of prodigal talent in both classical and contemporary dance. It's encouraging and refreshing to witness such unabashed enthusiasm for the art of movement in young dancers today, especially since this year's installment was dedicated to the unrivaled ballerina Violette Verdy. After a felicitous awards ceremony bestowing medals and scholarships to the competition's most promising dancers, audience members were treated to the very exciting, very real talents of this year's standout competitors in a vibrant gala, with a diverse mix of new choreography and tried-and-true classical favorites. BWW Cabaret Conversation: For BWW Award Nominee RAQUEL CION, Life is All David Bowie, All the Time
by Remy Block - May 13, 2016

Raquel Cion's critically acclaimed cabaret show Me and Mr Jones: My Intimate Relationship with David Bowie, has it's final performance of the current run at The Slipper Room on Sunday (May 15) at 8 pm. Cion has been working throughout NYC as an actor, director, and singer for the past 20 years, and has won accolades for her evocative performances. Since she was a teenager, Cion has had a deep, abiding, reverential love for the musician David Bowie, which she incandescently brings to light in this show, as much a one-woman Off-Broadway presentation with a band as a cabaret show. I recently met with Cion at the Chocolate Room in Brooklyn, and true to form, Cion ordered a vanilla milkshake, laughing at her tendency to swim against the current. We discussed her creative and emotional process for initially creating the Bowie show, and then changing the show on the fly after her beloved Bowie died this past January at 69. (more...)

BWW Review: IN THE HEIGHTS Brings the Joy of Love and Family Traditions to Energetic Life on the Streets of Washington Heights
by Shari Barrett - May 11, 2016

Much like the much-loved musical "Fiddler on the Roof," IN THE HEIGHTS focuses on family love and traditions being challenged by the beliefs of the next generation. In our modern world where a good education can make all the difference, what does it take for a poor family to put a cherished only child through an expensive university? And what happens when the student cannot keep up and drops out and gets romantically involved with someone her parents don't think is good enough? And what happens when a neighborhood is challenged by urban renewal and its flavor is about to be lost? Can it be Saved when local shop owners must leave their beloved neighborhood when rents rise? BWW Review: Rarely Revived It's a Bird...It's a Plane...IT'S SUPERMAN THE MUSICAL
by Don Grigware - Apr 25, 2016

Wham! Pow! Boom! Up and away, it's Superman! Growing up in the 50s I couldn't wait for the next weekly adventure-filled installment of Supie and Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, Perry White and the Daily Planet on the small television screen. It was thrilling to see a man go into a telephone booth and change from street clothes into tights - even if they were baggy - and fly off - imagine! - to save the world from crime and destruction. It didn't matter that it was pure fantasy and that he he was only a comic book hero. Superman brought lots of excitement into our young lives. In 1966, the same musical composers who wrote the successful Broadway hit Bye Bye Birdie, Charles Strouse and Lee Adams, penned It's a Bird...It's a Plane...It's Superman! The New Musical Comedy and in spite of the great reviews, it did not catch on with the public, so quickly fizzled. Now 50 years later, what a camp to look back and laugh at all the silliness and innocence of that era, for the Superman musical is loaded with clumsy, goofy, campy laughs. Now onstage in a rare revival ... It's Superman receives a terrifically entertaining production at the Grove Theatre in Upland. (more...)

Road to Opening Week 10: Matt Armet on 5 Weeks to A CHORUS LINE at Stratford
by Guest Blogger: Matt Armet - Apr 25, 2016

Last Saturday was arguably one of the toughest days of rehearsal all year. We started our day with a really great second dress run of the show which started at 1:45PM. This last dress rehearsal was almost as busy out in the house as it was for us on stage. We still had all of the production tables in the centre of the house for sound, lighting, and our director. Then we added an invited audience of roughly 500 people, about four video cameras for b-roll footage, plus two roaming photographers taking still shots. It was wonderful! The excitement before the show was high. It was very exciting to finally have an audience to find out if jokes would land and where we might have to hold longer for applause. The audience was mainly made up of friends of the cast and friends of the Festival. So the true test came on Tuesday when we had our first preview audience. (more...)
