REVIEW: SPRING AWAKENING Rocks the Body and Stirs the Soul at OCPAC

It's tough to be a teenager these days. And apparently, things weren't so easy back in late 19th Century Germany either. In what is possibly one of the most soul-stirring, beautifully-scored, creatively innovative musicals to have come out of Broadway in the past few years, SPRING AWAKENING (playing through November 29 at the Orange County Performing Arts Center) is an accessible period piece with the heart of a modern day teen drama (minus the After-School Special treatment). Sandwiched in between scenes of time-defiant angst is a beautiful (and at times, hard-rocking) musical score that is as equally rebellious as it is truthful. There's plenty to like here: from the bare but effective set, to the emotionally-charged performances of its young but impressive cast. With this show, there's a moment you know... you've been rocked. (more...)

REVIEW: RENT Broadway Tour Measures the Love at OCPAC (Ends 10/25)

Has it really been 13 years since RENT first arrived on Broadway? As soon as original cast members Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp make their entrance on stage to start the current "Broadway Tour" production (playing through October 25 at the Orange County Performing Arts Center), the audience erupts into deafening screams and howls, almost as if this was not a musical theater play but, rather, a rock reunion concert. In some aspects, it is. We've got two original members of the "band" coming together on the road, singing familiar hits...a little older—perhaps a little wiser—and getting the royal rock treatment, even before a single lyric is uttered. STAGE TUBE: AIDS Walk LA 2009 - John Lloyd Young Sings 'You'll Never Walk Alone'

On October 18, 2009, the crowd walked to "remember those we have lost, walked to help our friends, family and fellow Angelinos who are affected by HIV/AIDS, and walked to show our never-ending determination to end AIDS."
