Review - The Little Mermaid & Patti LuPone at NJPAC
by Michael Dale - Jun 8, 2013

By Disney standards the year and a half run of the original Broadway production of The Little Mermaid was a bit of a disappointment.  In theory, a competently created musical based on the hit animated film would probably run for a year and a half based on the title recognition alone.  My opinion of that show was higher than most of my colleagues.  I enjoyed it, but mostly for the vaudevillian pleasure of seeing a cast of terrific Broadway performers each getting a star turn or two.  But after some script revisions and a whole new visual concept, director Glenn Casale's production of the new Mermaid that just opened at Paper Mill is a well-crafted, delightfully designed and performed charmer. BWW Reviews: Marieann Meringolo Is Solid But Over-'Orchestrated' at the Metropolitan Room
by Stephen Hanks - Jun 5, 2013

As a big fan of cabaret shows that incorporate horn sections (as does Terese Genecco's monthly 'Little Big Band' efforts at Iridium or Carole J. Bufford's 2012 show, speakeasy., which featured Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks), I was more than a little jazzed to hear that compelling Streisand sound-alike Marieann Meringolo would be doing a package of her 'greatest cabaret hits' from past shows, but supported by a 7-piece band (including three horns--Richie Vitale on trumpet, Jonathan Kantor on tenor sax, and Danny Hall on trombone) for a gig spanning three weekend nights (May 31-June 2) that she and her director Eric Michael Gillett called 'Orchestrated.' In this case, 'orchestrated' unfortunately came across more like 'engineered' or 'manufactured.' (more...)

As a unique and charismatic interpreter of songs and live performer, too, Kaas has proven a worthy bearer of the Piaf torch. Kaas pays direct, emotional tribute to the legendary singer with the multimedia concert Kaas Chante Piaf, which comes to North America this September on a 45-country, 150-show tour of prestigious opera houses, concert halls and theaters, including a sold-out performance at Carnegie Hall last November.
