by Don Grigware - Feb 9, 2015

It all started simply enough when Dick Cavett invited author/critic Mary McCarthy on his PBS talk show on January 25, 1980. What resulted from a completely unplanned remark was one of the biggest literary feuds in history. McCarthy, when asked by Cavett to mention questionable authors at the time, is quoted as responding about the dishonesty of Lillian Hellman 'Every word she writes is a lie, including 'and' and 'the'. Hellman just happened to be watching the TV program and proceeded to sue McCarthy, Cavett and the network for over a million dollars. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Penumbra Theatre's BY THE WAY, MEET VERA STARK - A Timely (and Very Funny) Look at Black Actors in Hollywood
by Jill Schafer - Feb 8, 2015

In BY THE WAY, MEET VERA STARK, now playing at Penumbra Theatre as part of their 'Womansong' season, the title character is a black actress in 1930s Hollywood who gets her big break playing a loyal slave in an antebellum Southern melodrama. She imbues the stereotypical role with as much humanity and depth as possible, and so begins a long and successful career, until she mysteriously disappears from the spotlight. Vera is a controversial figure because on the one hand her characters perpetuate the stereotypes seen in movies, but on the other hand she makes her characters as real as possible and has built a successful career for herself and opened doors for black actors in Hollywood. The play examines these issues in a funny, entertaining, innovative way, jumping across time and using video of Vera's first movie. (more...)

by BWW News Desk - Feb 7, 2015

At 78-years old, post-modern choreographer Trisha Brown has established herself as one of the most influential choreographers of our time by articulating the extraordinary mechanics of everyday movement. Ann Arbor's relationship with Trisha Brown pre-dates the 1970 founding of Trisha Brown Dance Company; it was 1965 when Trisha Brown premiered 'Motor,' a work that involved Miss Brown, a Volkswagen Beetle, and a skateboard in the Maynard Street Parking Garage as part of the ONCE Festival. Trisha Brown's collaboration with contemporary visual art giants can not be understated, either: this tour showcases works with significant components created by Robert Rauschenberg, Donald Judd, Robert Ashley, and Laurie Anderson. This is an artist who made her mark pushing boundaries, an artist that we couldn't be prouder to present. (more...)

Zimmerli Art Museum to Display New George Segal Exhibit, 2/14
by BWW News Desk - Feb 10, 2015

New Brunswick, NJ – The inside of the artist's studio is seldom seen by the broader public. But the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers offers its audiences this rare opportunity through the exhibition George Segal in Black and White: Photographs by Donald Lokuta, which opens February 14, 2015. The show is accompanied by a catalogue of the same title. Lokuta met Segal in 1984 at the sculptor's studio, located on his family's farm in South Brunswick. The photographer soon returned to shoot a professional portrait, sparking an artistic alliance that would engage him for more than 16 years and result in nearly 15,000 negatives. The first selection of this two-part exhibition, through May 16, considers Segal inside and beyond his studio (with friends, family, and models), as well as The Studio itself as subject. The second installment, on view May 23 to July 31, focuses on Segal at work on his iconic figures. The public is invited to Art After Hours: First Tuesdays on March 3 for a curator-led tour of the exhibition, as well as an opportunity to meet Donald Lokuta. The evening also features live music and Slide Jam, as well as the talk “Vision Research: Interactions between Scientists and Artists,” presented by Thomas Papathomas, who is a Rutgers Professor and the Busch Campus Dean.
