The much loved story The Railway Children by E Nesbit centres around three siblings who are forced to move from London to Yorkshire. Their new home, Three Chimneys is close to the railway track and the children spend their days waving to the trains and befriending the station master Perks.

The Railway Children is undeniably wholesome. All the iconic moments from the novel are featured, perhaps most special being the reunion between the children and their father. Although the language used is true to the book which was first published in 1905, it comes across as delightful rather than dated.

A recent production of The Railway Children put a big emphasis on the spectacle of having a real steam train in the show. This production is staged quite simply, with cast members running on to arrange props and small, model trains running in the distance. The result is utterly charming and allows the beautiful storytelling to take centre stage. There are no gimmicks, just excellent acting and a wonderful story.

The Railway Children runs at the Theatre Royal, Glasgow until Sunday 9th July.
