Master composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim will appear on September 8th on the new edition of PBS NEWSHOUR WEEKEND. Below, check out a new sneak peek at Sondheim's interview with PBS' chief correspondent for arts, culture, and society Jeffrey Brown!

The MacDowell Colony will award composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim with its 54th Edward MacDowell Medal today, August 11. The MacDowell Colony, the nation's first artist residency program, has awarded the medal annually since 1960 to an individual artist who has made an outstanding contribution to his or her field. This year marks the first time a luminary has been chosen from the realm of musical theatre and Sondheim's generous offering of his talents to the stage made him a clear choice.

This year 14 students were selected from dozens of applicants from across the United States to participate in the 2013 Young Playwrights, Inc. Urban Retreat. The Urban Retreat is a nine day intensive in New York City that culminates in a staged reading off-broadway at the Lucille Lortell Theatre. The 2013 Urban Retreat Young Playwrights are: Ari Bell, Leah Bell, Jacqueline Crispino, Frank Garland, Jordan Eli Goldberg, Candace Hartsuyker, Leah Lane, Mollie Lipkowitz, Erin Neitzel, Dahlia Pham, Melina Schmidt, William Stieglitz, Irene Tapert, and Connor Woods.

These performances will bring together noted industry professionals with Academy graduates who will perform in the series. The first production will be a staged reading of John Cariani's new play, Love/Sick, directed by Daniel Winerman and produced by Andrew Polk.

Rattlestick Playwrights Theater Artistic Director David Van Asselt and Managing Director Brian Long have announced the company's 2013-14 season-its 19th-will include world premieres by Halley Feiffer, Charles Fuller, Samuel D. Hunter, Craig Lucas, Lucy Thurber, and Ken Urban.

The New School for Drama will welcome Naked Angels, the eclectic downtown theater company, as its producing partner, training young theater artists in an environment of experimentation and collaboration. Naked Angels will be housed in New School facilities and provide undergraduate and graduate theater students a critical professional association with working artists in New York theater.

Interstate 73, Page 73 Productions' writers group supporting early-career playwrights, where selected playwrights meet biweekly to share new pages with their peers and Page 73's Executive and Associate Directors, will welcome Stephen Brown, Meghan Deans, Peter Gil-Sheridan, David Jenkins, Kait Kerrigan, EM Lewis and Caroline V. Colt Coeur's Play Hotel reading series will present an industry reading of Justin Kuritzkes' The Sensuality Party on Monday, January 14th at 7pm at 80 Varick Street in Manhattan. Directed by Adrienne Campbell-Holt (Recall, Fish Eye, Seven Minutes in Heaven), the cast includes Lily Garrison (A Thought In Three Parts), Louisa Krause (The Flick), Drigan Lee (Six Degrees of Separation), Gayle Rankin (TRIBES), Cameron Scoggins (The Big Meal), and Matt Stadelmann (Seven Minutes in Heaven).
