'If music be the food of love, play on.' Even before the invention of the musical comedy (more on that later), William Shakespeare knew the importance of music in telling stories on stage. For our March feature, my colleague Jeff Walker and I thought that instead of marking the Ides of March with songs about murder, betrayal, and fate, we would focus on the synergy between showtunes and Shakespeare.

Shakespeare Theatre Company to Host MAN OF LA MANCHA-Themed Mock Trial, 5/11

The Shakespeare Theatre Company, recipient of the 2012 Regional Theatre Tony Award, presents its Annual Dinner and Mock Trial at Sidney Harman Hall (610 F Street NW) on Monday, May 11, 2015. This marks the 20th year that Shakespeare Theatre Company has put on the Mock Trial. The evening begins with dinner at 5:30 p.m. in the Forum, followed by the Trial at 7:30 p.m. in the theatre. A special session of the Supreme Court of La Mancha will review the decisions of the Family Court to declare Don Quixote mentally incompetent and his subsequent placement under the guardianship of his niece, Antonia.

Spring has arrived! The Marblehead School of Ballet is opening its doors and celebrating the arrival of the eagerly awaited new season. The performing arts institution will present a fun filled, cultural afternoon of Latvian theatre and classical and modern dance repertoire from the Marblehead School of Ballet on Sunday, March 29 at 3:00 p.m. at 115 Pleasant Street in Marblehead, Massachusetts. General admission is $5.

The Tony Award-winning Theatre Company at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts and Producing Artistic Director Kent Thompson are proud to announce the full lineup for their 37th season, which includes the return of Shakespeare and partnerships with Chicago's Lookingglass Theatre and Denver's own DeVotchKa. The new season kicks off September 11 running through May 15 and will feature eight main stage productions.

The Hilberry Theatre Company will present the final production of its 52nd season. The 39 Steps, running April 10th - 25th, takes a well-known story immortalized on film by Alfred Hitchcock and adds comedic, suspenseful, and fast-paced twists. The play is adapted by Patrick Barlow from the novel by John Buchan and the movie by Alfred Hitchcock.

BWW Review: WOMEN PLAYING HAMLET Now Showing at the Unicorn Theatre

The Unicorn Theatre production of Women Playing Hamlet currently runs on the Jerome Stage at the theater located at 3828 Main in Kansas City, Mo. William Missouri Downs wrote the Rolling World Premiere directed by Producing Artistic Director Cynthia Levin. Women Playing Hamlet is the second Rolling World Premiere for Downs who has won numerous playwriting awards. In his day all Shakespeare's characters were played by men, in Downs play four women play 19 parts, including male characters.

Shakespeare/Star Wars Mash Up Returning to Chicago, 4/30-5/24

E.D.G.E. Theatre has announced the return of MacSith, April 30 - May 24 at Pendulum Theater Space, 1803 W. Byron Ave. Based on William Shakespeare's Macbeth and set it the Star Wars universe, MacSith is adapted by Orion Couling and Jard McDaris and directed by Couling. Running time is 70 minutes. Previews are Thursday, April 30, Friday, May 1, Saturday, May 2, Thursday, May 7 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, May 3 at 3 p.m. Opening night is Friday, May 8 at 8 p.m. The performance schedule is Thursdays - Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. Tickets are $15 for previews and $18 during the run.
