BWW Reviews: It's the Story Between the Hits that Makes JERSEY BOYS a Continued Success
by Jill Schafer - Apr 30, 2015

The jukebox musical JERSEY BOYS is a crowd-pleaser. The story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons will celebrate 10 years on Broadway this fall and the tour is making its third stop in Minneapolis this week. At times during last night's opening night, the crowd reacted like this was a Four Seasons tribute concert. But it's so much more than that. This jukebox musical is not just hit after hit strung together with some loose threads we're supposed to accept as a plot. Rather this beloved and familiar music is woven into the true life story of the rise and fall of these Hall of Fame rock-and-rollers. It's like an episode of VH1's Behind the Music, revealing that all was not rosy behind those crisp harmonies and sharp dance moves. Fame and celebrity at a young age rarely lead to a smooth road in life. Any show that featured a string of hits from the '60s would be sure to sell out to a population dominated by baby boomers, but it's the clever book that weaves the hits together and tells a story worth hearing that is responsible for JERSEY BOYS' critical success and staying power.

BWW Reviews: JERSEY BOYS National Tour at Durham Performing Arts Center
by Jeffrey Karasarides - Apr 8, 2015

Set in the 1960's, Jersey Boys is presented in a documentary-style format that dramatizes the formation, success and eventual breakup of The Four Seasons. The musical is structured as four 'seasons', where each member of the group narrates giving their own perspective on the story.

BWW Reviews: JERSEY BOYS - An Electrifying Entertaining Evening
by Frank Benge - Mar 27, 2015

The 60's were an exciting time for music in America, due in no small part to the proliferation of groups with amazing vocal harmonies like The Mamas & Papas, The Beach Boys, Spanky & Our Gang and The Four Seasons. JERSEY BOYS is a jukebox musical based on the song catalog of The Four Seasons; however, unlike most jukebox musicals, JERSEY BOYS features an intelligent script where the songs flow with the story instead of being forced into a storyline. I suspect the participation of Rick Elice, who was also one of the scriptwriters for the charming and witty PETER AND THE STARCATCHER had more than a little to do with the intelligence and theatrical storytelling skill on display here.

BWW Reviews: 'Can't Take Your Eyes Off' JERSEY BOYS at Hershey Theatre
by Marakay Rogers - Jan 29, 2015

When is a jukebox musical not a 'jukebox musical'? If anything, it's when the musical is by its subjects, when they're an integral part of putting the show together. If JERSEY BOYS were any less a jukebox musical, it would be the original band on stage talking about their story and giving a concert themselves. With music by band member and composer Bob Gaudio, lyrics by 'Fifth Season' Bob Crewe -- in short, with the music and lyrics by the band's songwriters, one of whom was a band member, and book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, JERSEY BOYS isn't as much a jukebox musical as it is a musical documentary of a hair-raising story that wasn't in the news at the time.
