Houston Symphony Names Mark Nuccio as Principal Clarinetist

Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada and the Houston Symphony announced today that Mark Nuccio, current Associate Principal and Solo E-flat Clarinetist with the New York Philharmonic, has been appointed the Principal Clarinet of the Houston Symphony.  Nuccio will begin his new role in Houston during the week leading up to the 2015-16 Season's Opening Night concert on September 12, 2015.  He replaces former Principal Clarinet David Peck, who retired in 2013 after serving in that position for 33 years.  During the two-year interim, Associate Principal Clarinet Thomas LeGrand served as Acting Principal Clarinet.

The July-September broadcasts of The New York Philharmonic This Week - the weekly radio series of concerts and recordings by the New York Philharmonic, hosted by Alec Baldwin - will feature diverse programming, including Music Director Alan Gilbert leading Mahler's Symphony No. 2, Resurrection, in A Concert for New York on the 10th anniversary of 9/11; Bramwell Tovey conducing works including the World Premiere of a work he himself composed, featuring Principal Trombone Joseph Alessi as soloist; and special compilations celebrating former Philharmonic Music Directors Zubin Mehta, Pierre Boulez, and Kurt Masur.

Ten young instrumentalists from the Music Academy of the West are about to inaugurate the New York Philharmonic Global Academy Fellowship Program January 3-13, 2015, when they travel to New York City to train and play alongside New York Philharmonic musicians. All ten instrumentalists are from the prestigious Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California, selected by audition to be the inaugural Zarin Mehta Fellows. At a time when there is more competition than ever to succeed in the music profession, these Fellows will be immersed in all aspects of an orchestral player's life, from audition to performance, learning invaluable career skills.

SHSU Faculty Member Josu De Solaun Wins International Piano Competition

Josu De Solaun, a new assistant professor of piano in Sam Houston State University's School of Music, won the first prize in the piano section of the prestigious Enescu Competition that took place on Sept. 27 in Bucharest, Romania.

The September broadcasts of The New York Philharmonic This Week - the weekly radio series of concerts and recordings by the New York Philharmonic, hosted by Alec Baldwin - begins with Music Director Alan Gilbert launching the Philharmonic's 2014 Bravo! Vail residency with Nielsen's Maskarade Overture; Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3, with the 2013-14 Mary and James G. Wallach Artist-in-Residence Yefim Bronfman as soloist; selections from Grieg's Peer Gynt; and Liszt's Les Preludes. The second week, Alan Gilbert conducts the Orchestra in a performance of R. Strauss's Don Juan and Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks; The Marie-Josee Kravis Composer-in-Residence Christopher Rouse's Oboe Concerto, with Principal Oboe Liang Wang as soloist; and Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet, Overture-Fantasy. The following week, Bramwell Tovey conducts the New York Philharmonic at Bravo! Vail in Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man; Gershwin's "Strike Up the Band" from Strike Up the Band; Copland's Clarinet Concerto, with Associate Principal Clarinet Mark Nuccio as soloist; and Grofe's Grand Canyon Suite. In the final week of September, Music Director Alan Gilbert conducts the New York Philharmonic in a program of Mozart's final three symphonies - Nos. 39, 40, and 41, Jupiter -recorded in November 2013.

The New York Philharmonic will present its 11th season of Summertime Classics, July 2-6, 2014, featuring five themed concerts with Bramwell Tovey, who has been the host and conductor of the series since its founding in 2004. On the first program, July 2-3, 2014, titled 'Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, and Friends,' the New York Philharmonic will perform Shostakovich's Festive Overture; Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 1, with pianist Joyce Yang as soloist; Musorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain; Rachmaninoff's arrangement of his own Vocalise; and Tchaikovsky's Waltz of the Flowers from The Nutcracker, and Marche slave. The second program, July 4-6, 2014, titled 'Star-Spangled Celebration,' will feature the New York Philharmonic and United States Marine Drum & Bugle Corps - 'The Commandant's Own,' which is celebrating its 80th-anniversary year - in a program that includes Copland's Clarinet Concerto, with Associate Principal Clarinet Mark Nuccio as soloist, and Fanfare for the Common Man; Gershwin's 'Strike Up the Band' from Strike Up the Band; Sousa marches; and more. In these performances Major Brian Dix, director and commanding officer of 'The Commandant's Own,' will share conducting duties with Bramwell Tovey.

The New York Philharmonic will return to Bravo! Vail in Colorado for the Orchestra's 12th- annual summer residency there, performing six concerts July 18-25, 2014. Music Director Alan Gilbert will conduct three programs, July 18-20, featuring works by composers for whom he has advocated during his tenure, ranging from Nielsen to The Marie-Jose?e Kravis Composer-in- Residence Christopher Rouse. The other Philharmonic concerts will be conducted by Bramwell Tovey (July 23 and 25) and Ted Sperling (July 24), and will feature works by Copland, Gershwin, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and Loesser, among others.

Wallach Artist-in-Residence Yefim Bronfman, originally scheduled for March 30, has been postponed to Friday, May 23, 2014, at 8:00 p.m. at 92nd Street Y at Mr. Bronfman's request, due to an unforeseen scheduling issue. Tickets originally issued for March 30 will be honored on May 23.

The New York Philharmonic Ensembles, composed of musicians from the Orchestra, will give its fourth performance of the 2013-14 season on Sunday, March 23, 2014, at 3:00 p.m. at Merkin Concert Hall with a concert featuring Haydn's String Quartet No. 2, The Fifths; Brahms's Trio for Clarinet, Cello, and Piano; and Webern's arrangement of Schoenberg's Chamber Symphony No. 1. The musicians on the program will be violinists Anna Rabinova and Fiona Simon; cellists Eric Bartlett, Alexei Yupanqui Gonzales, and Wei Yu; violist Dawn Hannay; Principal Flute Robert Langevin; Associate Principal Clarinet Mark Nuccio and clarinetist Pascual Martinez Forteza; and guest pianists Margaret Kampmeier and Keun A Lee.
