The Cleveland Orchestra announces details about its annual Gala Concert taking place on Saturday, October 11, at 7 p.m. Pianist Lang Lang joins music director Franz Welser-Möst and The Cleveland Orchestra in the concert which features works by Tchaikovsky. The 2014 Gala is spearheaded by community philanthropist Norma Lerner as Gala Chair and KeyBank Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Beth Mooney as Gala Corporate Chair. Concert-only tickets are available through the Orchestra's Ticket Office at 216-231-1111, and tickets for the Gala benefit evening are available at gala@clevelandorchestra.com or 216-231-7524. The Gala evening includes a special post-concert dinner in Severance Hall created by Fire Food and Drink and Executive Chef Douglas Katz.

Jane Moss, Ehrenkranz Artistic Director of Lincoln Center and the Mostly Mozart Festival, announced today that Lincoln Center has extended the contract for Louis Langree, the Renee and Robert Belfer Music Director of the Mostly Mozart Festival and Orchestra through 2017. Maestro Langree made his Mostly Mozart Festival debut with the Festival Orchestra in 1998, and was named Music Director in 2002. The artistic partnership between Langree and the musicians of the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra has been an exceptionally inspired and 2017 will mark his 15th year as Music Director of the ensemble and the Festival. Under his musical leadership, the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra's stature and recognition as an outstanding ensemble has received extensive critical acclaim, and the orchestra's concerts are an annual highlight for summertime classical music lovers in New York City. And there are great figures, teachers, performers - artists - who show us the way. Sometimes their impact is so great that their work reaches people who have never even heard of them, nor dream that they have somehow impacted their life. One such figure is Long Yu, the preeminent Chinese conductor, who led the drive to establish a hunger for classical music in his country.

Music has an almost unmatched potential to inspire, to move, on occasion to lift an entire society in a cultural exploration, in the pursuit of cultural ideals. And there are great figures, teachers, performers - artists – who show us the way. Sometimes their impact is so great that their work reaches people who have never even heard of them, nor dream that they have somehow impacted their life. One such figure is Long Yu, the preeminent Chinese conductor, who led the drive to establish a hunger for classical music in his country – coming out of a time when it was forbidden to so much as hum anything other than a prescribed list of patriotic songs – and building its great institutions, among them the China Philharmonic (which he founded in 2000), the Shanghai Symphony, the Guangzhou Symphony and the Beijing Music Festival (of all of which he is music director). Fittingly, Long Yu will mark his 50th birthday next month with a concert to mark the opening of the MISA Festival – a new event that Long Yu co-directs with Charles Dutoit geared towards bringing young people towards classical music.

The Florida Orchestra (TFO) has announced the appointment of Michael Francis as its new Music Director starting with the 2015/2016 season, serving as Music Director Designate for the upcoming 2014/2015 season. Appointed as part of an initial three-year contract, his duties include being the primary conductor and providing the artistic leadership for concert programming and related artistic decisions. Although his primary role is with the Tampa Bay Times Masterworks series, he will also be conducting one concert each season for the Raymond James Pops and the morning Coffee Concert series. This reflects Francis' personal desire to be fully-integrated artistically with the orchestra and the organization.
