In our 37th season we have assembled a full playbill representing some of the most dynamic female voices working in theatre today. ?Well Born, a new play by Celeste Percy-Beauregard, chronicles an expectant mother who must confront her past in order to embrace her future. What she discovers about her birth parents however, does nothing to put her fears about her own pregnancy to rest. Well Born explores the themes of otherness, new motherhood, and preconceived notions associated with Down syndrome through a deeply personal and, at times, darkly comic lens.

From shattering the culture of shame in gender-based violence (Nirbhaya), to exposing the pitfalls of Canada's refugee system (Refuge), from unearthing the buried history of slaves in Salem (Obeah Opera), to the clash of idealism and bureaucracy (The Public Servant), the issues raised in these plays will ignite a compelling dialogue with our audience.

Nightwood Theatre's New Groundswell Festival to Return 9/8-14

Nightwood Theatre launches its 2014/15 season with the return of our popular festival of new works, the New Groundswell Festival, in The Historic Distillery District from September 8 to 14, 2014. Featuring workshop productions of Obeah Opera by Nicole Brooks and With Individual Desire by Susanna Fournier from an original idea by Kelli Fox and Sarah Kitz, the festival also features a National Play Reading Series, and late-night Saloon Salons on topical themes. The talents of more than 50 women artists will be showcased over the seven days of the festival.

Nightwood Theatre continues its 2013/14 season with the English-language premiere of The Carousel by Governor General Award-winning playwright Jennifer Tremblay at Berkeley Street Theatre, Downstairs from March 11 to 30, 2014. The sequel to The List, in The Carousel the same unnamed woman faces the imminent death of her mother and must make the journey home to confront her past. Acclaimed for her poetic mastery of language, Tremblay structures the play as rides on a carousel, peeling away the layers of familial guilt and fierce love that bind three generations of women. The Carousel is directed by Megan Follows in her directorial debut and features the incomparable Allegra Fulton, reprising her role from Nightwood Theatre's smash-hit production of The List.
