Performance Network’s Community Art Project Red All Over Begins Thursday
by Harmony Wheeler - Apr 10, 2012

During a scene of John Logan's Tony-winning "Red," soon to be presented at Performance Network Theatre, the artist Mark Rothko and his assistant reach a pivotal breakthrough when passionately arguing what the color red represents to them; lipstick, a heartbeat, the feeling of a sunrise. Inspired by this question -- what IS red? -- Performance Network Theatre has begun "Red All Over," a Community Art Project aimed at creating an artistic representation of Ann Arbor, using only the color red.

BWW Reviews: RED at TheaterWorks Hartford Could Use More Layers
by Lauren Yarger - Apr 11, 2012

Cynical, angry artist Mark Rothko (Jonathan Epstein) hires a young idealistic assistant, Ken (Thomas Leverton) to work with him on his newest commission: a series of four murals to hang in the newly constructed Four Seasons Restaurant in Manhattan. A smart dialogue about painting and about American society unfolds with the teacher-student relationship transitioning. Ken's hopes that Rothko might be a friend, or even a mentor to replace the father he discovered murdered at a young age are dashed with every stroke of paint, however. The master's vision for companionship extends only to the relationship between the paintings. The end result is always the same for him: tragedy. Rothko is struggling with the futility of life and with putting his brilliance on the walls of a commercial enterprise where its full meaning of the color red might or might not be comprehended by the capitalists dining beneath it.

But that is precisely what John Logan's Tony Award winning play "Red", currently playing at the Seattle Rep, is putting out there. by Roy Berko - Mar 23, 2012

If you've ever gone into an art gallery and seen a canvas with a large square within another square on a solid background, or a strip of color vertically slicing through a sea of solid color, you've been exposed to what may be classified as a painting of the anti-figurative aesthetic segment of the Abstract Expressionism movement. One of the most important painters of that school of art was Mark Rothko.
