BWW Reviews: The New Jewish Theatre's Giddy Delight of SCHLEMIEL THE FIRST
by Chris Gibson - May 24, 2013

SCHLEMIEL THE FIRST is a giddy delight, with songs and laughs barreling along at a frenetic pace. Based on the play by Isaac Bashevis Singer (conceived and adapted by Robert Brustein), this Klezmer musical (composed by Hankus Netsky and Zalmen Miotek, with lyrics by Arnold Weinstein) is guaranteed fun from start to finish, and The New Jewish Theatre has put together an exceptional production that is well worth your time and attention.

BWW Reviews: Dramatic License Production's Comical Farce BOEING,BOEING
by Chris Gibson - Mar 6, 2013

Playwright Marc Camoletti's BOEING, BOEING (translated by Beverly Cross) has had its share of success over the years, running for nearly 20 years in Paris, and being turned into a Jerry Lewis and Tony Curtis film in 1965, before being revived on Broadway in 2008. Now, Dramatic License Productions is presenting their take on this swingin' sixties farce, and they've put together an excellent presentation. The cast is terrific, the story is cute, and the direction is sharp as a tack. This amusing play is well worth your time and attention.

BWW Reviews: St. Louis Actors' Studio Holiday Offering SEASON'S GREETINGS
by Chris Gibson - Dec 3, 2012

I have to confess that I'm not particularly fond of playwright/director Alan Ayckbourn's brand of British farce. I just don't think it translates very well to American audiences, and it requires the actors involved to sport solid accents, or it loses its credibility. That's why I was a bit surprised by the St. Louis Actors' Studio's choice of his work, SEASON'S GREETINGS, as their holiday offering. They're best known, to me at least, for their edgy premieres and inspired revivals, so this is something of a disappointment. Perhaps, they were drawn to it's sudden violence and black comic trappings, but it just doesn't suit them as well as it might.

BWW Reviews: Mustard Seed Theatre's Exceptional Production of GOING TO SEE THE ELEPHANT
by Chris Gibson - Sep 5, 2012

If you go in thinking you're going to see a pachyderm when you attend GOING TO SEE THE ELEPHANT, then you might be disappointed. However, the metaphor it represents is duly explained early on to avoid any unnecessary confusion. Instead, you'll be treated to a post Civil War tale of four women taking on the harshness of the Kansas prairie. It's a brilliant slice of pioneer life, buoyed by powerful performances and excellent direction. Mustard Seed Theatre's current production is a fascinating look at a bygone era.

BWW Reviews: Upstream Theater's Provocative Production of THE MAIDS
by Chris Gibson - Feb 22, 2012

Playwright and raconteur (what else would you call a man orphaned by his prostitute mother, who grew into a thief, before finding his niche as a controversial and often banned writer?) Jean Genet's THE MAIDS (translated by Martin Crimp) is a peculiar and provocative one act whose images stay with you long after its 90 minutes are finished. It's an interesting take on the separation of the classes, focusing on the maids of a wealthy mistress and the humiliation she submits them to, although we only briefly glimpse this. The play shows two different reactions to this abusive behavior, and tells its story mostly through the playacting of the maids themselves. It's a fascinating and rarely seen work that's well worth your time, and Upstream Theater's current production is helped by three stellar performances and sharp, incisive direction.

St. Louis Actors' Studio Presents World Premiere of Neil Labute's JUST DESSERTS
by Lauren Wolman - May 21, 2011

St. Louis Actors' Studio concludes its fourth season, themed 'Angels and Demons,' with an evening that gets right to the heart of it. According to Mr. LaBute, these pieces were written '... to say something about love and life and betrayal and art and a number of other themes.... Each one for a different reason and for a different show or person or cause....along with some new material that is debuting here, these fragments of work have been performed in venues around the world but never before in this exciting combination. My task is to be true to my characters and to take my audience for a ride--I hope you all feel like that's the case when the curtain comes down (or the lights go out) and you've made it to the curtain call'

BWW Review: St. Louis Actors' Studio Presents ROCK 'N' ROLL
by Chris Gibson - Nov 14, 2010

We probably take the cultural impact of rock 'n' roll for granted, not fully comprehending the effect this raw, powerful blast of rebellious freedom has had worldwide, where it has somehow managed to shape generations that are far removed from its origins. With his play ROCK 'N' ROLL, Czech playwright Tom Stoppard is able to show us firsthand how this music molded the beliefs, hopes, and dreams of his own youth, and he filters it through a unapologetic, surprisingly sentimental haze that makes for an engaging and compelling ride through time. The St. Louis Actors' Studio is currently presenting a very entertaining and sharply acted and directed production of this work at the Missouri History Museum.

by BWW News Desk - Nov 11, 2010

St. Louis Actors' Studio continues its fourth season, themed Angels and Demons, with Tom Stoppard's semi-biographical ROCK 'N' ROLL. ROCK 'N' ROLL is an electrifying collision of the romantic and the revolutionary. It is 1968 and the world is ablaze with rebellion, accompanied by a sound track of the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. Clutching his prized collection of rock albums, Jan, a Cambridge graduate student, returns to his homeland of Czechoslovakia just as Soviet tanks roll into Prague.

BWW Review: St. Louis Shakespeares' Production of THE TEMPEST
by Chris Gibson - Oct 6, 2010

Shakespeare's last great play, THE TEMPEST, has always been a favorite of mine, if only because it lends itself to intriguing stagings and imaginative re-interpretations with it's appealing mix of comedy, romance, and magic. And, with director Julie Taymor's film version about to be put into wide release, it's certainly a good time to revisit this material.
