New York City Department for the Aging Issues Call for Artists for SPARC: SENIORS PARTNERING WITH ARTISTS CITYWIDE

New York City Department for the Aging Commissioner Lilliam Barrios-Paoli and Cultural Affairs Commissioner Kate D. Levin today announced that the Department for the Aging (DFTA) will provide $200,000 in funding to support a second year of SPARC: Seniors Partnering with Artists Citywide, a community arts engagement program that places artists in residence at senior centers across the five boroughs. The new funding will allow the City to build on the success of the 2012 SPARC program, which was supported, in part, by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. During the 2012 program, 50 artists delivered more than 2,000 contact hours of arts programming to hundreds of senior participants at 44 senior centers. Artist residencies for the 2013 SPARC program will take place in select senior centers from January through June 2013.

Justin Roberts Performs Family Concert at The Jewish Museum, 10/14

The acclaimed indie kids' singer Justin Roberts will perform at The Jewish Museum on Sunday, October 14 at 2:00 pm. Kids will dance to Roberts' upbeat acoustic-pop and soulful sounds, and hear whimsical songs from his Grammy-nominated album, Jungle Gym, such as 'We Go Duck' and 'New Haircut,' along with hip tunes with a biblical twist from Why Not Sea Monsters: Songs from the Hebrew Scriptures. Justin will be joined by the Not Ready for Naptime Players, featuring Liam Davis (electric guitar/keyboards/vocals) and Gerald Dowd (drums).

The Jewish Museum presents Power to the Portrait Family Day, a fun-filled multi-generational event celebrating the colorful worlds of artists Kehinde Wiley and Edouard Vuillard today, May 20 from 12 noon to 4 pm. Activities include two performances by Jukebox Radio, a huge drop-in art workshop, and self-guided family gallery hunts. The family day is inspired by The Jewish Museum's exhibitions, Kehinde Wiley/The World Stage: Israel and Edouard Vuillard: A Painter and His Muses, 1890-1940. This event is free with Museum admission.

Etkin will play tunes from his 2010 album, Wake Up, Clarinet! and will create musical connections between Africa and Israel in conjunction with the Museum's current exhibition, Kehinde Wiley/The World Stage: Israel. Etkin's interactive performance effortlessly conveys sophisticated concepts in a fun musical language that kids of all ages can understand.

The Jewish Museum to Present Dirty Sock Music Romps, 1/31-4/3

The Jewish Museum will present Dirty Sock Music Romps, a weekly music class for toddlers on ten Tuesdays from January 31 through April 3, 2012 from 10:00 to 10:45 am. This hip and original class is being taught by Mike Messer, lead singer of The Dirty Sock Funtime Band. Toddlers ages 6 months to 4 years will play on a series of kid-sized instruments, learn to keep beats, and have a chance to dance, jump, clap, sing, and laugh. The songs used in the class are an upbeat mix of Dirty Sock hits, kid friendly rock songs, children's classics, and tunes fromSock-A-Delic, the new Dirty Sock Funtime Band album. Each song is an invitation to participate through call-back lyrics, interactive dances, and hands-on jamming. All families will receive a Dirty Sock Funtime Band CD..

David Grover to Perform Passover Concert at The Jewish Museum, 4/1

The Jewish Museum will present a Passover concert for families by David Grover with Grover's Gang, on Sunday, April 1 at 2 pm. Singer/guitarist David Grover's folk sound for the 21st century will entertain adults and children alike. Children can celebrate freedom and dance to such songs as The Matzah Song, Go Down Moses and Man Come Down to Egypt. Grover will be joined by special guest Meredith Wright, founder of the kids' music band Sweetbeatz, adding her jazzy voice to the holiday music. Grover's Gang also features singer/bassist Kathy Jo Grover, singer/drummer/guitarist Mike Sacco, and Charlie Tokarz on woodwinds.

Mayor Bloomberg Opens New Soundstages, Announces Programs To Help New Yorkers Get Jobs In Entertainment

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Media & Entertainment Commissioner Katherine Oliver today joined Steiner Studios Chairman Douglas C. Steiner to open five new soundstages at Steiner Studios in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The new stages, totaling 45,000 square feet, will provide new and expanded opportunities for New Yorkers who work in the film, television and commercial production industry. The Mayor also launched initiatives designed to support and grow the industry, including new grants for training programs that prepare New Yorkers for careers in production and digital fields; a new entertainment component to the City's mini-MBA partnership with NYU's Stern School of Business; and a request for proposals for a "Made in NY" Media Center, which would provide media companies with affordable work space and other services. Mayor Bloomberg and Commissioner Oliver were joined at Steiner Studios by Boardwalk Empire actress Gretchen Mol and the show's writers; Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn; Seth Pinsky, President of the Economic Development Corporation; Robert W.
