Victoria Theatre Association's Miami Valley and Good Samaritan Hospitals Broadway Series will end its run of MOONLIGHT AND MAGNOLIAS, May 23 at the historic Victoria Theatre. A comedy by Ron Hutchinson and produced by The Human Race Theatre Company, MOONLIGHT AND MAGNOLIAS gives an 'inside' look at how the script for the movie Gone with the Wind was created-in five days!

The Hartt School Honors Late Jazz Legend Hank Jones

The jazz world and The Hartt School lost a great musician and friend on Sunday, May 16, 2010, when the legendary Hank Jones passed away. Mr. Jones, an artistic collaborator with and personal friend of Hartt faculty members Steve Davis and Nat Reeves, presented a master class, performed a concert with Hartt faculty and students, and received an honorary degree from the University of Hartford on April 13, 2009. He died in New York City yesterday, at 91 years of age.

Jazz, once a singularly American invention and one of the United States' greatest exports, has become a truly international phenomenon, with important players from all over the world making valuable contributions to the music's evolution. Europe, previously home to many of the most devoted connoisseurs of the art form, is now also the producer of some of the most innovative voices in jazz. With the inauguration of its European Modernists series Dreyfus Jazz is proud to bring U.S. audiences some of the best creative music being made on the continent today. The first releases in the collection showcase musicians from Belgium, France and Italy, spotlighting two long respected veterans and a pair of important younger voices. Taken together, Belgian guitarist Philip Catherine, French pianist Jean-Michel Pilc and Italians, drummer Aldo Romano and saxophonist Rosario Giuliani, these artists represent the continuing trend of noteworthy original music emanating from European environs.

The Beatnik Café: Musical Revue of the Jazz Beat Generation is scheduled to perform on June 20th at 7:30 pm. Beatnik Café will play at the 80 seat Richmond Shepard Theater (309 E 26th St. at 2nd Ave). Tickets are $25 and include one drink.

The newly restored Church of St. Francis Xavier and the Mary Lou Williams Foundation will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the First Lady of Jazz with a concert to benefit Xavier Mission outreach programs including the homeless shelter and soup kitchen. WBGO Jazz 88.3FM radio host Rob Crocker will emcee the celebration taking place on Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 7:30pm.

The concert will serve as the first of many events marking the church's recent restoration. The lineup will include: renowned jazz pianist Aaron Diehl with his trio, including special guest Victor Goines on saxophone and clarinet; Yasushi Nakamura on bass and Marion Felder on drums; Laurel Massé, founding member of the vocal group Manhattan Transfer and a 40-voice choir directed by John Uehlein, Music Director at the Church of St. Francis Xavier. Mr. Diehl was hailed by The New York Times as a 'revelation' and by the Chicago Tribune as 'the most promising discovery that [Wynton] Marsalis has made since Eric Reed.'
