BWW Review: FALL FOR DANCE Closes the 13th Annual Festival With a Mesmerizing Quadruple Bill
by Sondra Forsyth
- Oct 10, 2016
Founded in 2004, New York City Center's annual 'Fall for Dance' festival is an inspired idea that continues to fulfill the admirable mission of introducing new and younger audiences to the world of dance. Tickets are a mere $15, a price that's within the reach of millennials yet that coincidentally also tempts NYC's older dancegoers to venture out for performances of less than traditional dance fare. Over the years, the offerings have become an increasingly diverse and international roster of works created by innovative choreographers and performed by first-rate dancers.

San Francisco Opera Presents 'The Fall of the House of Usher' A Double Bill
by Robert Diamond
- Nov 26, 2015
San Francisco Opera presents the U.S. premiere of The Fall of the House of Usher-an innovative double bill of Gordon Getty's Usher House and Claude Debussy's La Chute de la Maison Usher, both inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's chilling 1839 short story. Opening on December 8, the double bill provides two contrasting takes on one of the most transformed pieces of literature ever created. Director David Pountney's eerie production, designed by Niki Turner, provides an "aptly evocative setting for the Gothic horror writer's dark imaginings" (The Stage, UK) and features imaginative, otherworldly video projections filmed by video production designer David Haneke at Penrhyn Castle in North Wales. Conducted by Lawrence Foster, who led the 2014 world stage premiere at Welsh National Opera, this presentation marks the U.S. premiere of Gordon Getty's Usher House and the American professional premiere of Robert Orledge's "truly seamless" (The Guardian, UK) reconstruction of Debussy's unfinished score.

BWW Reviews: Fall for Dance Offers 'Diverse' Bill
by Lauren Wingenroth
- Oct 20, 2014
Though formulaic, Fall for Dance programs, presented each fall at New York City Center with the universal ticket price of $15, tend to succeed in including a diverse set of voices. Program 4 fulfilled this expectation, featuring works by Brian Brooks Moving Company, Tim Harbour, Benjamin Millipied, and Dr. Rennie Harris. The evening was delightfully varied in both the styles danced and the experiences represented. One important exception dampened this program and the festival as a whole--the lack of work by women choreographers, a disappointing but not unusual exclusion.
