The Shakespeare Theatre to Offer Reading of THE PHYSICISTS, 9/22

The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, one of the nation's leading classic theatres, will present a staged reading of The Physicists by Friedrich Durrenmatt, translated by James Kirkup, and directed by Brian B. Crowe as part of the Lend Us Your Ears Reading Series on September 22 at 7 p.m. The play explores the notion that the quest for new discoveries and knowledge often comes at a dear cost, with high stake responsibilities and consequences. The Reading Series offers audiences the opportunity to join Shakespeare Theatre directors, actors, and artistic staff as they explore diverse and compelling plays. Amphibian Stage Productions today announced newly released screenings of National Theatre Live through early spring 2015, presented in association with the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. Star-studded productions of A Streetcar Named Desire, Medea, Skylight, an encore screening of Frankenstein starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller, John and Treasure Island will follow the previously-announced screenings of A Small Family Business and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.

BBC Two recently announced that it will air three filmed adaptations of Shakespeare's History plays including a new version of Richard III. Today, BBC Two confirmed on its Twitter feed that actor Benedict Cumberbatch will take on the role of the titular king.

Forthcoming productions at the National Theatre, announced today by Nicholas Hytner, include plays familiar, rare and new: Shakespeare's Othello, Gorky's Children of the Sun,James Baldwin's The Amen Corner;Marlowe's Edward II, Pirandello's Liola, Eugene O'Neill's Strange Interlude and Georg Kaiser's From Morning to Midnight. Tori Amos and Samuel Adamson's musical The Light Princess will premiere in October, and there will be a new adaptation of Emil and the Detectives for family audiences at Christmas.

The 2012 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize has been awarded to U.S. playwright and Texas native Jennifer Haley for her play The Nether. At a private reception in London on February 28, the transatlantic theatre community gathered to honor the playwright and finalists of the annual prize.
