A Wildly Popular Trashy Melodrama from the Yiddish Theater to be Performed at YIVO

Once a staple of the popular Yiddish stage, Isaac Zolotarevsky's legendary 1910 melodrama Gelt, Libe, Un Shande will be presented on Monday, February 6th at 7 PM at the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research in a new English translation by writer/director Allen Lewis Rickman under the title MONEY, LOVE, AND SHAME! This one-night-only event will feature two-time Drama Desk Award winner Everett Quinton (The Mystery of Irma Vep, Camille, Natural Born Killers, Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella), Samantha Maurice (Much Ado About Nothing, The Grasshopper Way, The Winter's Tale), Allen Lewis Rickman ("Boardwalk Empire," "You Don't Know Jack," A Serious Man, Relatively Speaking), Yelena Shmulenson ("Boardwalk Empire," "Orange is the New Black," "The Knick"), Kevin Sebastian("Blue Bloods," "Bull," Goyband), Jacqueline Sydney (Filmic Achievement, The Prom Queen, Confess), and Kraig Swartz (A Picture of Autumn, Donogoo, So Help Me God!)  MONEY, LOVE, AND SHAME! will be directed by Allen Lewis Rickman, with piano accompaniment by Steve Sterner (25 years as house pianist at Film Forum, where he accompanies classic silent movies with his own scores).

New Yiddish Rep is presenting the US premiere of 'Making Stalin Laugh,' British playwright David Schneider's dark comedy that details the events leading up to the chilling silencing by Stalin of the revered Yiddish actor Solomon Mikhoels. Directed by Allen Lewis Rickman, the developmental workshop production plays an exclusive two-night engagement at Theatre 80, 80 St. Marks Place in the East Village, Sunday and Monday May 17 and 18, both at 7pm. The production's multi-lingual cast includes Israeli television star Gera Sandler (as Mikhoels), and Yelena Shmulenson ('A Serious Man').

It's time to close up CSC's third annual Black Box Festival with the show that played to sold out audiences in last year's New York Fringe Festival. The Essence: A Yiddish Theatre Dim Sum is a rollicking comedy that lets audiences in on the best kept secret-Yiddish is actually cool-and it's playing November 21-24 in the Kutz Theatre of the Lackland Center. The Essence… is a fast-moving revue for people who know nothing about Yiddish and couldn't imagine attending a show with Yiddish in it. It's about the most expressive and theatrical language in the world, with scenes, sketches, songs, and oddball diversions with an irreverent introduction to all things Yiddish.

Film & TV veteran Bryna Weiss is joining the cast of DANCING ON NAILS, a new play by Paul Manuel Kane, for the final two performances tomorrow (Wednesday) at Theatre 80. She is replacing Lauren Klein (in the role of Luba Fogel) who had a prearranged departure after the July 24th opening to star as Linda Loman in the Denver Center Theatre Company production of Death of a Salesman, which is set to open next month.
