Entering its 37th season of dance this October, Miami City Ballet (MCB) will welcome four new members of its board. Mamie Joeveer (who previously served on MCB's board from 2016-2020) and Eleanor Pao have joined the Board of Directors. Pearl Johnson and Dr. Elissa Kramer have joined the Board of Trustees. Chair Jeff Davis currently leads MCB's board.

San Diego Repertory Theatre (San Diego REP) has announced details for the fourth production of its 42nd season, Black Pearl Sings! This intimate play with music, from playwright Frank Higgins, will be helmed by Thomas W. Jones II. Black Pearl Sings! begins on Wednesday, November 22, 2017 and plays through Sunday, December 17, 2017 with an opening night on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at 7 p.m. in the Lyceum Space Theatre at San Diego REP in Horton Plaza.

Black Pearl Sings opened on Saturday March 7 at the Just Off Broadway Theatre in Kansas City, Missouri. The production marks two firsts for Spinning Tree Theatre, the production of a local playwright and the first time the company utilized a director outside the organization.

An ambitious 'song collector,' for the Library of Congress, Susannah Mullally (Nancy Malone), is searching for undiscovered folk music with African-American roots in the prisons of Texas. Her best hope may be found in Alberta 'Pearl' Johnson (Donna Thornton), who has been imprisoned for 10 years for killing a man.

John and Alan Lomax were pioneering folklorists and ethnomusicologists who tracked down songs and performers to produce field recordings that provide a compelling picture of our cultural history in musical terms. Oft times, their recordings required them to travel to remote locations, or even prisons, to find heretofore undiscovered gems. BLACK PEARL SINGS!, by playwright Frank Higgins, is an intriguing and fictionalized take on their unique talent for ferreting out these songs, here casting an ambitious female in their role. The Black Rep's current production is an engaging glimpse into the processes individuals like the Lomax brothers utilized, and it features sharp direction and a terrific two person cast.

Set in the 1930's, jailed in a Texas prison, Alberta 'Pearl' Johnson has little hope for release and even less for reconnecting with her missing daughter. That is until Susannah Mullally, a song collector on a mission to record pieces of African American culture, overhears Pearl singing while on a visit to the prison. Through her music, Pearl has the unexpected opportunity to earn her freedom and search for her daughter. BLACK PEARL SINGS! is a work that harnesses race relations and the rich oral history of the African American community to build a tale that is funny, touching and compelling.
