New Federal Theatre to Hold 53rd Anniversary Celebration Next Month at Edison Ballroom


NEW FEDERAL THEATRE will hold its 53rd Anniversary Celebration on October 2 at Edison Ballroom, honoring Woodie King, Jr., Gabrielle Kurlander, and Sade Lythcott. The gala is chaired by Kenny Leon and Lynn Whitfield.

The Castillo Theatre (Dan Friedman, artistic director; John Rankin, associate managing director) has scheduled two talk backs in-conjunction with its current production of Fred Newman's Billie, Malcolm & Yusuf, directed by award-winning director, Gabrielle Kurlander. The Castillo Theatre (Dan Friedman, artistic director; John Rankin, associate managing director) is proud to announce that it will produce a revival of the 1991 play by Fred Newman, Billie, Malcolm & Yusuf, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Yusuf Hawkins' murder in 1989.  Billie, Malcolm & Yusuf will be directed by award-winning director, Gabrielle Kurlander.  The production includes blues and rap music. The Castillo Theatre is located at 543 West 42nd Street in Manhattan. Performances are between February 15 and March 17, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., Sundays at 2:00 p.m.

The Castillo Theatre and the non-profit All Stars Project (ASP), announce this week that the New Federal Theatre (NFT), founded by Woodie King, Jr., will now make its home at the All Stars performing arts and development center at 543 West 42nd Street.

On April 18 at Lincoln Center, Gabrielle Kurlander, President and CEO, All Stars Project, Inc., led an evening of inspiration during the All Stars Project 2016 National Gala. The event honored the tremendous contributions of executives from American corporate and educational institutions including EY, MetLife, Hunt Consolidated, PWC and Washington College, and over $2M was raised in support of All Stars programs. The Gala highlighted the Development School for Youth, an All Stars program that partners with the business community to help inner-city young people learn a professional performance, followed by placing them in paid summer internships.  This summer, All Stars Project will be placing a record number of 500 young people in internships at 150 companies across the country.  Gala attendees and participants were treated to a special hip-hop performance from dozens of alumni and youth leaders from the All Stars Talent Show Network, the All Stars flagship program. Woodie King Jr's New Federal Theatre continues its 44th season with Dr. Du Bois and Miss Ovington starring Kathleen Chalfant and Timothy Simonson. Gabrielle L. Kurlander directs. Performances begin January 16h, with opening night scheduled for January 30th.

Castillo Theatre Extends Run of CARMEN'S PLACE (A FANTASY) Until 6/16


The Castillo Theatre production of Carmen's Place (A Fantasy), called "an aria to behold" by critics in this opera-within-a musical running through June 16. Carmen's Place features an original pop score by Annie Roboff and Fred Newman, and in its show-within-the-show, some of the best-known and best-loved operatic numbers ever performed. Director Gabrielle L. Kurlander received the AUDELCO "Viv" Recognition Award for Excellence in Black Theatre as Best Director of a Musical Production in 2012 for Newman-Roboff's Sally and Tom (The American Way).
