In 1968 'Hair,' dubbed the American Tribal Love-Rock musical, exploded on Broadway. It shocked the nation, but gave an accurate picture of a world rocked with chaos. The Vietnam war raged, the peace movement flourished, draft cards were burned, rebellion against traditional values exploded. 'Drugs, sex and rock and roll' became the mantra of the day and were clearly exposed on stage. The show's book was strong and the score was filled with top ten hits including 'Aquarius,' 'Good Morning Starshine,' 'I Believe in Love,' and 'Where Do I Go?' It became the seminal musical theatre offering illustrating 'theater representing the era from which it comes.'
Unable to see AMERICAN IDIOT in New York City, I am so happy that the Third National Tour finally brought the show to Houston, TX. This lively, youthful cast owns every moment of this explosive and exhilarating AMERICAN IDIOT, and I can't imagine any other cast performing this rollicking, raucous piece as well as they do. Every human on the stage gives this show everything they can, and the end result is something I'll cherish for years to come.

'American Idiot,' in this touring production, is a definitive crowd pleaser and you can't ask for much more than that.
The national tour of Green Day's AMERICAN IDIOT, the explosive Broadway hit, makes its Washington premiere tonight, February 18, and continues through the 23rd at National Theatre as part of the Broadway at the National subscription series.
Don't let the scattered empty seats in Bass Concert Hall fool you. American Idiot is quite possibly the biggest sell-out show in history. Billie Joe Armstrong and Co., I hope the millions you've earned by pimping out one of the greatest albums of a generation made it all worth it, and I hope it didn't hurt to see your greatest achievement robbed of all its emotion and power. Even Bono was able to contribute to musical theater while maintaining more integrity.
Casting has been announced for the upcoming national tour of Green Day's AMERICAN IDIOT, the explosive Broadway hit, which makes its Washington premiere February 18 - 23 at National Theatre as part of the Broadway at the National subscription series.
One may argue that AMERICAN IDIOT is a glorified concert. Or that it is just a medium for singing Green Day songs while swearing and making rude guestures, and I think a few members of the audience thought that as they left shortly after the first song. However, there is much more to the musical then just the music
The Broadway Across America national tour rolled into Salt Lake City for a three-performance run, and the cast created a highly entertaining, stirring production of this musical snapshot of a teenage wasteland.

Direct from Broadway, the smash-hit musical AMERICAN IDIOT tells the story of three lifelong friends, forced to choose between their dreams and the safety of suburbia. Their quest for true meaning in a post 9/11 world leads them on the most exhilarating theatrical journey of the season, running May 28-June 2, 2013. Tickets are on sale now.
Green Day lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong, who wrote this rock opera's lyrics, and his punk rock band that created its unstoppably vibrant music weren't going for "comfortable." They were aiming, along with co-creator and director Michael Mayer (who picked up a Tony for his direction of Spring Awakening), to offer a musical production that breaks ground for its in-your-face punk rock approach to storytelling and its entirely unapologetic tale of sex, drugs and (punk) rock n' roll. And while there's lots of all of the above-and all very well done-there's not so much in the way of a plot with any depth.

Billie Joe Armstrong, Green Day's vocalist/guitarist wrote the lyrics for 'American Idiot' in the rock opera style of 'The Who', with songs that follow three disenfranchised young men- Johnny (Alex Nee), Will (Casey O'Farrell), and Tunny (Thomas Hettrick) as they attempt to leave their stifling suburban selves in the hopes of not becoming another 'American Idiot'.
A group of friends, loud music, drugs, sex, war and rebellion against parental authority. If you're thinking Spring Awakening or Hair, you're close, but just a generation or two off. This one is American Idiot, a Punk Rock musical featuring songs from Green Day and making a tour stop at the Bushnell.

The show must go on, or so the saying says. This weekend, with a major blizzard plowing through New England, that didn't always hold true. Case in point, Providence Performing Arts Center, which had to cancel two Saturday performances of the touring production of Green Day's rock musical American Idiot. Fortunately, both of the Sunday performances went on as scheduled. Even luckier for area audiences, another show has been added for Monday evening, so there's one more opportunity to check out this stunning and intense production.
