Ngozi Anyanwu's GOOD GRIEF Wins Inaugural Humanitas/CTG Playwriting Prize


Center Theatre Group and Humanitas announce that Ngozi Anyanwu has won first place for the inaugural Humanitas/CTG Playwriting Prize, with Dan O'Brien in second place and Louisa Hill in third place. The prize is awarded annually to the best new unproduced play written by a Southern California-based writer. The winning plays will be developed with CTG's literary staff, led by CTG's Director of New Play Development Pier Carlo Talenti, and will be presented in staged readings at Humanitas Play Fest, Celebrating Southern California Playwrights, at the Kirk Douglas Theatre from February 12-14.

CTG and Humanitas Seek Submissions for PLAY LA Workshop


Center Theatre Group and HUMANITAS will be accepting submissions from Los Angeles-based playwrights from January 15 to February 29, 2016, for the second edition of its PLAY LA Workshop.

Ten Finalists Selected for First Annual Humanitas/CTG Playwriting Prize


After reviewing over 230 play submissions, Center Theatre Group announced today that 10 finalists have been chosen for the first annual Humanitas/CTG Playwriting Prize. The award will be given to the best new, unproduced play written by a Southern California playwright.

East West Players Announce Winners of '2042: See Change' Playwriting Competition


East West Players (EWP), the nation's longest running professional theatre of color and the largest creator of Asian Pacific artistic work, announces the winners of the "2042: See Change" playwriting competition, funded with generous support from the James Irvine Foundation.  The 2042: See Change initiative is a visionary goal for equity, diversity and inclusion for the American Theater. According to the US Census, by 2042, minorities are projected to become the majority. The "2042: See Change" Playwriting Competition received a record-breaking number of submissions that were professionally unproduced and explored the changing face of America.

Humanitas/CTG Playwriting Prize Seeks Submissions Through June 30


As a part of their new partnership PLAY LA, Center Theatre Group and Humanitas will be accepting submissions starting June 1 for the Humanitas/CTG Playwriting Prize, which supports Southern California playwrights. Submissions will be accepted until June 30.  Three finalists will be notified in mid-December 2015 and the winner will be announced at the 41st Annual Humanitas Prize Awards Luncheon in February of 2016.  This is the first year Humanitas and CTG are awarding this annual prize.

Humanitas & Center Theatre Group to Launch PLAY LA


Humanitas, which has for years given budding television writers a leg up through its New Voices mentorship initiative, will now add support for locally based playwrights through PLAY LA, a new program launched in collaboration with Center Theatre Group (CTG). The announcement was made jointly by Humanitas President Ali LeRoi and CTG Artistic Director Michael Ritchie.

The Kirk Douglas Theatre was originally an historic 1940s Streamlined Moderne-style movie house called the Culver Theater, and it is believed that Kirk Douglas' movie "Spartacus" played there in the early 1960s. In 2003 it was transformed into an intimate 317-seat live theatre venue and named for the theatre's initial major donor: Kirk Douglas. On Tuesday, October 14, 2014, CTG's Kirk Douglas Theatre celebrated its 10th birthday with Anne and Kirk Douglas in attendance.

Photo Flash: Stars Turn Out for LA Stage Alliance Ovation Awards' Red Carpet & Ceremony


The 24th Annual LA Stage Alliance Ovation Awards, celebrating theatrical excellence and achievement during the 2013 season, were presented on Sunday, November 3 at the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse Thirty-five awards were bestowed upon 13 different Southern California theatre companies. Leading the pack with 12 was Center Theatre Group (seven for The Nether at the Kirk Douglas Theatre; three for Joe Turner's Come and Gone at the Mark Taper Forum; one for The Scottsboro Boys at the Ahmanson Theatre; and one for The Royale at the Kirk Douglas Theatre). CTG was followed by 3-D Theatricals with five awards (four for Parade and one for Shrek the Musical). The Chance Theater and La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts took home three awards each (including Best Season for La Mirada); Circle X Theatre Company, the Fountain Theatre, and the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble tied with two each. CTG Announces 2011-2012 Writers' Workshop Participants


Center Theatre Group has announced the participants chosen for the 2011-2012 Writers' Workshop. Administered by CTG's Literary Department, the Writers' Workshop consists of seven Los Angeles playwrights who gather over nine months to share their work and assist one another in the creative process of developing their individual plays.

Adriana Sevan Awarded 2008 Middle East America Distinguished Playwright Award


The three theater organizations from across the nation, Golden Thread Productions in San Francisco, the Lark Play Development Center in New York, and Silk Road Theatre Project in Chicago, who formed Middle East America (MEA): A National New Plays Initiative have awarded the 2008 Middle East America Distinguished Playwright Award to Adriana Sevan.
