The Barn Theatre in Montville, New Jersey continues its 86th Season by holding open auditions for its upcoming production of Shrek The Musical, music by Jeanine Tesori, book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire. The Barn Theatre is seeking a multi-talented, multi-cultural cast of 25+ performers ages 7 to 60s.Shrek The Musical will be directed by Lionel Ruland.
AUDITION DATES: Friday, March 14th 7pm - 10pm / Saturday, March 15th 1pm - 4pm
NOTE: Auditions will NOT be held at the Barn Theater but INSTEAD at Mary Lou Hale's School of Dance, 135 North Beverwyck Road, Lake Hiawatha, NJ 07034
CALLBACKS (by invitation only): Sunday, March 16th 1pm - 6pm
PERFORMANCE DATES: May 16th - June 7th (Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays).
SHOW DESCRIPTION:
In a faraway kingdom, an unseemly ogre shows up to rescue a feisty princess. Along for the ride is a donkey who won't shut up, a short-tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude and many other fairy tale misfits. Shrek the Musical is part romance, part twisted fairy tale and irreverent fun for everyone!
CAST REQUIREMENTS:
SHREK (Male, 20s-40s) Big Green Ogre. Grumpy hermit with a huge heart. Powerful singer with strong belt, Scottish character voice, great comedic timing.
PRINCESS FIONA (Female, 20s-30s) Quirky, Beautiful, Blunt. Strong princess who turns into an Ogre every night. Powerful singer with strong belt, comedic timing. Tap dancing a plus but not necessary.
DONKEY (Male, 20s-40s) Optimistic chatterbox. Strong singer with soul, great comedic timing.
LORD FARQUAAD (Male, 20s-50s) Self absorbed, flamboyant. Strong singer, great comedic timing. Must be able to perform and dance entire show on knees.
PINOCCHIO (Male/Female. Late Teens-30s) Lots of sass and attitude. Leader of Fairy Tale Creatures. Character voice. Will also perform other roles.
GINGY/SUGAR PLUM FAIRY (Female, Late Teens-40s) Gingerbread puppet operated by Fairy. Character voice. Strong singer with soul, able to do vocal runs. Will also perform other roles.
DRAGON (Female, 20-40s) Imposing and flirtatious. Strong singer with soul. Will also perform other roles.
TEEN FIONA (Female, 12-17) Portrays Princess Fiona as a teenager with attitude. Strong voice. Will also perform other roles.
YOUNG FIONA (Female, 7-11) Portrays Princess Fiona at 7 years old. Strong voice. May also perform other roles.
YOUNG SHREK (Male, 7-11) Portrays Shrek at 7 years old. Non-speaking role. Will also perform other roles.
ENSEMBLE - (Males & Females, Late Teens – 60s) Roles include: Big Bad Wolf, Three Little Pigs, White Rabbit, Fairy GodMother, Peter Pan, Wicked Witch, Ugly Duckling, Three Bears, Mad Hatter, Humpty Dumpty, Three Blind Mice, Shrek’s Mom & Dad, Fiona's Mother & Father, Guards, Knights, Citizens of Duloc. Strong Vocalists, Comedic actors, dancers.
Actors are asked to arrive to sign in within the first hour of the audition start time. Please prepare 32 bars of a musical theater song that shows off your vocal ability. Bring sheet music in the appropriate key. An accompanist will be provided. Please provide a current headshot photo and resumé if possible. All roles are available.
