I am very pleased to announce auditions for Verismo Opera Theater’s upcoming summer production of Donizetti’s Elixir of Love. We will be producing this opera in Italian with English supertitles. All roles are open, and all singers will be paid, including our ensemble. We are looking for approximately 30 singers to sing in our chorus. If you are seeking to audition for a lead role, please prepare the following:

  • Nemorino – tenor – “Una Furtiva Lagrima” or “Quanto e Bella”
  • Adina – soprano – “Prendi, per me sei libero” or “Della crudele Isotta”
  • Belcore – baritone – “Come Paride vezzoso”
  • Dr. Dulcamara – bass – “Udite, udite, o rustici”
  • Giannetta – soprano – any Donizetti or Bel Canto Aria

If you are auditioning for the ensemble, please prepare something in Italian – preferably by Donizetti or another Bel Canto composer. All selections are to be memorized. Our Music Director, Pedro Yanez, will be playing for the audition. The fee to audition will be $15. Our Stage Director, Cathy Dunn, will also be in attendance at our auditions.
You will be given approximately 6-7 minutes for your audition, so please do bring a second piece if you wish. We may not have time to hear it however. In addition, as our concept is highly energetic, we will ask that all singers are comfortable with dancing. Please note this, but there will not be a “dance call” at the audition. However, since this show is set in the “Swinging 60’s of San Francisco”, you will be asked to sing 20 seconds of your favorite karaoke song of the era. Yes, we are serious! We want to see if you can have fun and can let your hair down – it IS a comedy after all!!! J
We will have 4 performances in the last 2 weekends of August. All performances will be at the Arts Center in Oak Park. We will have 6 weeks of rehearsals prior to our first performance. All roles will have an understudy and a “cover”. Each understudy will receive at least 1 full rehearsal with staging along with a special invited dress rehearsal during tech week. All understudies and “covers” will receive private coachings with our music director, scheduled by him. All understudies and covers will be section leaders and sing in the ensemble. If you do not wish to sing in the chorus, you will not be asked to sing as an understudy – please just be honest about this point.

The deadline for completing these materials is January 24th. No late entries will be considered. In addition, all incomplete applications will not be processed. Please email Dawn directly at:

Please note that not all singers will be auditioned. You will hear no later than January 30th if you are granted an audition.
