Fabian Russell conducts a programme of “carnival” music. Dvo?ák’s exuberant overture perfectly depicts the whirl and frenetic bustle of Carnival season in the late winter of the southern hemisphere. Saint- Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals represents another kind of carnival, a collection of musical portraits of creatures made of feathers, furs and fins. Stravinsky’s ballet score Petrushka, which, in its outer tableaux, presents a riot of sound and colour as experienced in a town fair in Old Russia.
