Young Chinese violinist Tianwa Yang makes her MPO debut playing Lalo's Symphonie espagnole. (Although titled a "Spanish Symphony", it is really a violin concerto, with violin solo and Spanish motifs throughout the piece.) A concerto for orchestra is designed in such a way that every instrument or instrumental group gets time in the spotlight. The example by the great Polish composer Witold Lutoslawski, whose centenary we celebrate this year, is one of the best and best-known. This music is suffused with energy, teems with folk elements, and juxtaposes great sonorous masses.
