Gustav Mahler's grief-laden Kindertotenlieder song cycle features contralto Sara Mingardo. Mahler was fascinated, almost obsessed, with details of orchestration, both in his own works and in those of others. He was a keen judge of what "worked" and what didn't. To this end, listeners already familiar with Schumann's wonderful Second Symphony should find a wonderful sense of discovery in Mahler's revision of this work.
