Rich in allegorical themes and teeming with tragic irony, Suzan-Lori Parks' Pulitzer winner TOPDOG/UNDERDOG opened at The 5 & Dime Theatre Monday night. Celebrating the removal of the theatre's arch nemesis, a support pole that previously ran straight through the front of the stage, the house was packed (sold out, in fact), brimming with anticipation for this necessary show. TOPDOG/UNDERDOG tells the story of two brothers who have been dealt desolate hands in the game of life, and how each processes his fate. (more...)

Live Ink Theatre is pleased to announce a lively staged reading of "Lillian, Paula. Carson" a play by John Barrow on Wednesday, June 28th, 8 pm, at Amelia Community Theatre's Studio 209. Directed by Ron Kurtz and performed by Fran Hindsley, Sadie LaManna and Sinda Nichols, the play had its' world preview in March at The Morningside Players in NYC. Set in 1953 in Northern Georgia, this inspiring and enlightening drama gives us a unique view inside the hearts and mind of three brilliant women: Lillian Smith, best selling novelist of "Strange Fruit", and a strong opponent of segregation in the South; Paula Snelling, Lillian's long-term companion and co-editor with Lillian of the magazine 'South Today', and CarsonMcCullers, novelist and playwright (The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, The Member of the Wedding). Queen's Harbour resident Carly Juliana Barnes is cast as the lead in the Alhambra Theatre & Dining's upcoming production of Annie, set to open June 28, 2017.  Selected from an open casting call of more than 110 girls, Carly is one of two talented young leading ladies that perform as Annie.  She is joined by Jena Simmons of Jupiter (FL).  A much-celebrated Broadway musical, Annie continues the Alhambra's 50th Anniversary Season. For the fourth consecutive season the Alhambra's summer family show is sponsored by Snyder Heating & Air Conditioning of Jacksonville (FL). (more...)

Shortstack is the passion project of recent graduates from Jacksonville's Douglas Anderson School of the Arts. These students, who are currently pursuing fine arts degrees at colleges around the country, have returned home for the summer to share their love of theatre with the next generation of rising stars. Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus' MAMMA MIA!, the smash hit musical based on the songs of ABBA, plays the Thrasher-Horne Center on June 20th, 2017 as a part of its final farewell tour. This performance will be the hugely successful musical's last Florida date, as well as the tenth to last engagement before the casts takes its final bows. After closing a 14-year run on Broadway in September 2015, this will be the American public's last chance to see this electrifying musical in its original tour. (more...)

With tear stained cheeks, the 2017 graduating Musical Theatre class at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts took their final bows in the DuBow Theatre last Thursday night at the Spring Musical Theatre Showcase, directed by David Loudermilk. In his first year at Douglas Anderson, Loudermilk directed a phenomenal performance of PARADE in the fall, which was met with high acclaim and appreciation, and set the tone for a diverse and compassionate season.
