SEEKING
Equity actors. We are especially committed to an ethnically diverse cast. Older and younger MENASA, African-American, Asian, and multi-ethnic actors are strongly encouraged to audition. We also seek actors of all sexes, sexualities, ages, physical abilities, and categories beyond what we know today! Experience with classical drama is helpful. We are an experimental theater company and actors must be comfortable with unorthodox approaches and unusual treatment of text. We seek actors who are comfortable trying things without knowing why.
PREPARATION
Please prepare a brief (not more than two minutes) monologue from any play written before 1942. Please be comfortable with the language and confident in using it. Please bring a picture and resume, stapled together.

BREAKDOWN

We are an experimental theater company and actors must be comfortable with unorthodox approaches and unusual treatment of text. We seek actors who are comfortable trying things without knowing why. In our 2019 / 2020 season we continue an exploration of the classic collection of ancient stories, The Thousand and One Nights. We will experiment with sections of this vast work and devise a play created by the company.
We are seeking five principal ensemble members (all gender types). Actors will shift and share roles often, depending on the sections we choose for adaptation. See below for character breakdowns:
ACTOR TRACKS:
Track 1: Female-identifying or non-binary; Scheherazade, King, Porter
Track 2: Female-identifying or non-binary; Scheherazade, Caliph, Shopper
Track 3: Male-identifying or non-binary; Scheherazade, King, Dervish
Track 4: Male-identifying or non-binary; Scheherazade, Caliph, J’afar
CHARACTERS:
Scheherazade: the mysterious storyteller of the 1001 Nights; she is an astonishingly resourceful and ingenious human.
King: Shahzaman who keeps Scheherazade at his mercy every night. Will he kill her or will he ask for one more story?
Caliph: Harun al Rashid, the legendary ruler who presided over a golden age; he is wise but he is impatient too.
Shopper: The beautiful woman who draws the Porter into her story
Porter: a simple working person, who carries goods in the market
Dervish: a mendicant wandering through town looking for a place to spend the night
J’afar: the Caliph’s Vizier; J’afar tries to keep his boss calm which is a struggle
