Eleven Equity actors capable of mastering an Ozark dialect (see breakdown). Actors of any ethnicity are encouraged to audition. The play is set in 1913, only six years after the Oklahoma Territory was admitted into the Union. Riggs himself was part Native American, like many of the States residents. The book and movie Killers of the Flower Moon are set in the 1920s, a few years later than this play.

Lynn Riggs (1899-1954) is the author of “Green Grows the Lilacs”, which became the basis for the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical “Oklahoma!” He wrote 21 other plays, including “Sump’n Like Wings”, which was optioned three times but never produced. It was published in 1928. Set in Oklahoma between Spring 1913 and Summer 1916, “Wings…” is a coming of age story, charting the growth of Willie Baker a fiery, impulsive young woman. Her uncle tells her mother, You cain't keep her in a place that's got a lid on it. She's got sump'n inside of her like wings, and she'll beat off the cover, and she'll go away…
Willie Baker—Leading role, female. 18+ to play 16 at the start of the play. “Not quite out of the awkward stage, she is tomboy and coquette, raucous and gentle by turns.”
Mrs. Baker—leading role, late 40s early 50s. Willie’s mother, a widow, who runs the hotel dining room. “Her voice is rather sharp, but one would guess her to be kind at heart. She gives the curious impression of being both hard and human at the same time.”
Elvie Rapp—30s, Elvie is “a morbid, ill-looking girl.” Has an eerie presence that can be disconcerting.
Hattie-- 40s. Described as “Uncle Jim's housekeeper” she’s too domineering to take orders easily, and never hesitates to speak her mind with Jim. They bicker lovingly like a long-married couple.
Opalena—20s. Hattie’s daughter, a charming young woman with an outgoing personality and fine singing voice. She sings a few a cappella folk songs with vigor and charm. An accomplished musician is preferred.
Mrs. Clovis—40s-50s, an acid tongued gossip. Mrs. Clovis appears in the play's first scene only and may be asked to u/s Mrs. Baker.
“Boy” Huntington – leading role. Described as “22, boyish–rather rough” Boy is immature, indecisive and appealing.
Uncle Jim Thompson – Leading role. “Watt Jim”, past 55. Warm-hearted, gentle man. Willie's uncle, and brother of Mrs. Baker. Proprietor of the St. Francis Hotel.
Osment/ Loomis: M, 50s – Osment is a garrulous gossip with a big laugh and a sense of humor. Loomis is unsavory, unappealing, described in the text as “fat, gross, dirty”.
Clovis/Graden: M, 50s – Graden has a good sense of humor. He enjoys arguing with Uncle Jim and pretends to be innocent but may be quite sly.
Sheriff Beach/ Bill Wade – 30s, tall and sturdy, thinks a lot of himself.
