SEEKING

The Western Playhouse of Missouri Western State University is seeking actors/singers/dancers for WEST SIDE STORY.




PREPARATION

Please prepare 16-32 bars of a traditional musical theatre song that best shows your skills. Also please have a contrasting musical song (stylistically, range, etc.) in case it is requested. Prepare a short monologue. Bring your book as well as a headshot and resume. Accompanist will be provided.

Tony (Lead): Male, 20-30
Romantic young man and former leader of the Jets, he has found a new lifestyle now; finds himself violently torn between his friendships and his love for Maria; genuinely sweet and sincere; Strong Singer and actor; Some Dance. Tenor, Bb2-Bb4.
Ethnicity: Caucasian, All Ethnicities

Maria (Lead): Female, 18-25
Bernardo's sister, a hopeless romantic and innocent young girl; falls in love with Tony and finds herself at the center of the violent conflict between the two gangs; Strong Singer and actor; Some Dance. Soprano, Bb3-C6.
Ethnicity: Hispanic, Ethnically Ambiguous / Mixed Race

Anita (Lead): Female, 20-30
Bernardo's girlfriend and Maria's friend; feisty and assertive; dispenses older sister advice to Maria and tries to shield her from the dangers of the gangs; extremely strong dancer/singer; Mezzo-soprano/belter, F3-D5.
Ethnicity: Hispanic, Ethnically Ambiguous/ Mixed Race, African American

Bernardo (Supporting): Male, 22-35
Maria's brother and Anita's boyfriend, leader of the Sharks gang, a proud, strong, handsome man; seeks to carve out territory as a sense of identity for himself and his friends; strong dancer/singer; Baritone, Bb2-Eb4.

Chino: Male, 18-25
Shy, gentle, sweet-faced young boy, the intended husband of Maria; baritone.

Tony's best friend. Glowing, driving, intelligent, slightly wacky leader of the Jets; tenor. Strong Singer/Actor. Heavy dancing.

Scrawny teen-aged girl, pathetically dressed to imitate the Jets, and wants desperately to be taken seriously by them. Heavy dancing.

Plainclothes policeman used to being in charge, superficially pleasant to cover his venom, fear, and bigotry.

A not-too-bright street cop.

Glad Hand: Male, 40-60
Nerdy, overly cheerful and ill-equipped social director at the local gym dance. *this role may be doubled with another role.
