Breakdown

SIMON
50s. A recently freed slave. Reared Jewish and is strong in his faith. A dignified man. Family and freedom are most important to him. He's loyal to a fault to his former owners, but will not accept the past master/slave relationship he lived.

JOHN
20s. A recently freed slave who was educated by his owners. Reared Jewish but practices his religion for survival more than faith. He's angry and rebellious toward his former owners and whites. He's prepared to do anything necessary to live and build a new, free life.

CALEB
20s. Jewish, only son of a slave-holding father, he returns home injured after the war. The only life he's known is that of white entitlement and doesn't understand how being on the losing side of the war will affect him. He's secretive and cautious.
