Breakdown

The Nance recreates the naughty, raucous world of burlesque's heyday and tells the backstage story of Chauncey Miles and his fellow performers. At a time when it is easy to play gay and dangerous to be gay, Chauncey's uproarious antics on the stage stand out in marked contrast to his offstage life.

The production will star B.J. Cleveland as Chauncey Miles.

Ned - Mid to late 20s. Attractive and not terribly sophisticated. A country boy in the city. Earnest, with a great work ethic. Emotionally open and vulnerable despite his physical strength. May appear slightly dim, but is very smart. As a performer in sketches, he must have natural flair for burlesque comedy as both comic and straight man. Nudity is required.

Efram - Mid to late 50s. Jewish. A performer and a business man, runs the artistic side of the Irving Place Theater. A Damon Runyon quality to his speech. A natural worrier and fretter. On stage, must be able to handle top Banana style burlesque comedy. A tough exterior but a good heart.

Sylvie - Late 30s to late 50s. A burlesque stripper. A Catholic communist from the outer boroughs of New York who has not had an easy life. A real no-nonsense vocal quality with a New York accent. Must be comfortable moving and wearing very little clothing for striptease sequences. She's strong, a presence, can hold her own in an argument. Some singing involved.

Carmen - Late 20s to early 40s. A burlesque stripper. Born in New Jersey but of Latin descent. She can put on and take off the Latina accent as the situation (in life or in sketch) permits. She has a big heart but has not had an easy life. Must be comfortable moving and wearing very little clothing for striptease sequences. Some singing involved.

Joanie - Mid-20s to Late 30s. A burlesque stripper. A wonderful Gracie Allen, Jean Arthur quality that makes her a natural for sketches. Borderline blasé, she sort of takes things as they come. Must be comfortable moving and wearing very little clothing for striptease sequences. Some singing involved.
