THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST
Seeking:
Jack Worthing:
(Youngish 25-35) To the Manor Born. Rich and privileged all his life. Has his own Estate. He leads a double life so as to be both landed gentry and rouge about town. Handsome, witty, very intelligent and a master at appearing Honest – “Earnest” He is the Guardian of Cecily Cardew. Leads one life in the city and another in the country – at his estate. He is in love with Gwendolen Fairfax
Algernon
(Youngish 25 -35) the best friend of Jack Worthing, - whom he has always believed is called Earnest. The nephew of Lady Bracknell, he is very selfish, brilliantly witty and, yes, amoral. Also, born into great wealth.
Gwendolen Fairfax
(youngish 25 – 35) Intellectual, very cosmopolitan, artificially moral and appropriately pretentious. The daughter of Lady Bracknell and in love with Earnest. She is so wealthy that she has never thought about it.
Cecily Cardew
(youngish 18 – 24) She lives at the country estate of Jack Worthing as she is his ward. She is intrigued by her fantasies of wickedness. Her imagination has led her to fall in love with her idea of a man called Earnest and has invented her own courtship and romance between Earnest and herself.
Lady Bracknell
(55 - 65) Role CAST. Actors will be considered as possible replacements, should any become necessary.
Miss Prism
(over 40) A Puritan with a underlying softer romantic side. Cecily’s governess. Smitten with the romantic attentions of Reverend Chasuble. A woman who is quite fond of announcing severe Puritan beliefs – not necessarily because she believes them – but because they sound good.
Doctor Chasuble
(over 50) a Doctor of Divinity with strong romantic feelings for Miss Prism. He is the rector on Mr. Worthing’s estate.
Lane & Merriman
(50 – 100) Lane is Algernon’s valet and Merriman is the butler at Jack’s estate. To be played by the same actor. Both condescendingly “loyal” to their superiors.

BOY (PETER):
Youthful, precocious, a survivor who is learning to trust for the first time. Must be able to play lower teens and sing.
PRENTISS:
Peter’s sidekick, also youthful/teen, ambitiously naive, yet spunky and brighter than he knows. Sings
TED:
Peter’s friend, a lovable dreamer with a dry sense of humor, as well as a teen who is food obsessed,
THE BRITISH SUBJECTS
LORD LEONARD ASTER:
A British Lord and faithful subject to her majesty. Paternal, heroic, able to keep a secret and speak a magical language.
MOLLY ASTER:
A leader, bright, precocious, fearless (teen-looking) fighter for equal rights for females! and a mezzo soprano.
MRS. BUMBRAKE:
Molly’s nanny, also doubles as Teacher, the mermaid. Can be either male or female, but must have a true sense of the ironic. A tenor or baritone soloist, sings a cappella; British & Scottish dialects.
CAPTAIN ROBERT FALCON SCOTT:
Captain of the Wasp, a do-gooder, physically agile actor, bari-tenor, British accent.
GREMPKIN:
The mean schoolmaster of St. Norbert’s Orphanage for Lost Boys; Doubles as: FIGHTING PRAWN: King of Mollusk Island. He has vowed to kill any Englishman that visits his kingdom. vocal range: bari- bass; British and Tropical dialects required.
THE SEAFARERS
BILL SLANK:
The Neverland’s self-serving, vicious and opportunistic captain. A baritone-bass; British and Tropical dialects required. doubles as HAWKING CLAM: Son of Fighting Prawn and Sweet’n Sour Shrimp.
ALF:
An old sailor, and love interest of Mrs. Bumbrake, Both oafish and romantically inclined.
MACK:
An incompetent sailor who wants to be anywhere but under the thumb of Bill Slank.
BLACK STACHE:
The world’s most feared pirate. He can be an imbecile at times, but he is always right. Athletic and the ultimate chewer of scenery. vocal range: bari-tenor, British accent.
SMEE:
First mate to Black Stache, and not the sharpest crayon in the box. He is the classic faithful, comic side-kick. A tenor
SÁNCHEZ:
A hardworking Spanish pirate.
