Breakdown

Holly & Curtis are Caucasian. Seeking all ethnicities for all other characters.

Holly, F, 20s, mezz-sop. Confused girl, running away from impending marriage in an upper-middle class family in the suburbs, finds joy & humanity with the flower children of San Francisco. Sings How Can I Be Sure, Different Drum, Let Me Be, Happy Together.

Curtis, M, 20s, baritenor. Straight-laced fiancé to Holly, chases after her to bring her back to where she belongs, which her believes is by her side as a dutiful wife. Confronts the hippies who befriend Holly, and eventually learns to embrace the counter-cultural lifestyle they present to him. Sings How Can I Be Sure, This Guy’s In Love With You, For What It’s Worth, Happy Together.

The Tribe

River, M, 30s, baritenor. The leader of our tribe of hippies. A laid-back flower child with both a wife (Saige) and a girlfriend (Janis) on each arm, he’s the ‘Pied Piper of Peace & Free Love.’ Sings Grazing In The Grass, People Got To Be Free, Signs, Spinning Wheel.

Mama, F, 40s-60s, alto. The earth mother of our tribe, the moral maypole that everyone circles. One word or gesture can command attention from the tribe, yet her warmth for mankind and love of the universe are her main attributes. Sings Make Your Own Kind of Music, Words of Love, Get Together.

Coyote, M, 20s, tenor. Seemingly stand-offish, yet ultimately warm and friendly. Easily befriends Holly and helps her become a full tribe member. Likes Donovan. Sings Somebody To Love, Dream A Little Dream of Me, San Francisco.

Saige, F, late 20s-early 30s, mezz-sop. (Seeking all ethnicities.) River’s wife-in-common, warm center, caustic on the outside to cover any pain inside. Sticks with her husband even as he hangs with his new girlfriend. Sings Dream A Little Dream Of Me, Piece Of My Heart, Somebody To Love.

Rufus, M, 30s, bari-tenor. Returned Vietnam War vet. (African-American.) Rufus is a war protestor and agitator, early Black Panther-type. Sings War, Piece Of My Heart.

Janis, F, 20s, mezz/sop. River’s newest girlfriend. Pregnant, always hanging onto River and at his side. A bit subservient to the power of her man. Sings Somebody To Love, Words of Love.

Donovan, M, 20s, tenor. The ultimate stoner, always in a haze, always trying to pull one over on someone. Likes Coyote. Provides the drugs for Curtis’ cathartic experience. Sings Crystal Blue Persuasion, Piece Of My Heart.

Willow, F, 20s, mezz/alto. Flower child to the hilt, best friend to Donovan, absolute believer in “better living through chemistry.” Sings White Rabbit, Crystal Blue Persuasion, Words of Love.

Dizzy, M, 20s, bartone/bass. Leader of the theatrical troupe, full member of the tribe. Sings and dances in all ensemble numbers. Good dance movement a plus.

Daisy, F, 20s-30s, sop. Theatrical troupe member, sings & dances in all ensemble numbers. Good dance movement a plus. "
