Breakdown
Ensemble dancers (with special skills), and children's roles (Walter and Jane) for SECONDHAND LIONS.
Walter- 11 years old. Walter is smart, with a quick sarcastic wit. He is also sensitive and has a depth and wisdom beyond his years. Walter starts the show very shy and afraid, but with the help of his uncles learns to be brave and confident. Soprano (unchanged voice) with a strong, contemporary mix and belt.
]Hub-60’s. One of Walter’s two surly uncles. Tough and dark. He isn’t letting anyone in. Though he would never say so, he has never gotten over the death of the love of his life, and covers his sadness with salty humor and a penchant for fist-fighting. Needs an actor of great power, and also someone with a good sense of comedy. Baritone.
Garth-60’s. The other of Walter’s two surly uncles. Underneath his tough, cowboy exterior is a kind and caring soul. He’s a bit bookish, and loves to tell stories and tall tales. Needs a charismatic actor with excellent comic timing. Baritone.
Jane- 11 to 13 years old. Jane is the smart next-door neighbor to Walter. She's extremely intellignet, and bot afriad to show how much smarter she is than Walter or anyone else. Needs to have a good sense of comedy, and be very confident. Belter with a big voice and range.
Mae-Mid-30’s. Walter’s mother. A bit of a gold-digger, a bit trashy. Not really cut out to be a mother. Mae is always looking for the next man, and the next buck. Willing to use her looks (what’s left of them) to get her an easier life. High belter with great vocal control and understanding of country style.
Sultan-40’s. The Sultan of Oujda, Morocco. Educated at the best schools in England. Very smart, very good with words, and also mad with power. He wants it all – power, riches, and the beautiful Jasmin – and he’ll do whatever it takes to get it. He is the main antagonist to Young Hub, a crafty and powerful villain. Tenor with great high notes and ability for fast patter.
Samira-20’s or early 30’s. The beautiful and sexy princess. She is not someone who waits around to be rescued by a man. She is sharp tongued, an excellent fighter, and very confident. High belter with soprano.
Young Hub-20’s or early 30’s. A rough and tumble adventurer. Like Errol Flynn, or one of those romantic leads from an old swashbuckling adventure movie. He’s looking for excitement, and seeks it by joining the French foreign legion. Quick to fight, quick to party. He also has a deep sense of justice and values honesty and loyalty. Bari-tenor with a rich, heroic voice.
Young Garth- 20’s or ealy 30’s. Hub’s brother. A bit bookish, and a bit fearful, though he would never show it. Hub drags him along on the adventures. In spite of himself, he does love it and adores his brother. Bari-tenor.
