Breakdown

Romeo and Juliet bursts breathlessly to life as the Bard’s immortal tale of impetuous young lovers and the senseless hatred that poisons their hope asks the question: can any generation escape the sins of the fathers? This sleek, sexy new production immerses you in the emotional chaos of two innocent teens fighting desperately to choose their own destiny. This physical, contemporary production of Shakespeare’s timeless romance will be performed by a company of 10 actors.

SEEKING:

ROMEO
(16-22) The son and heir of Montague and Lady Montague. Romeo is handsome, intelligent, and sensitive. Though impulsive and immature, he is filled with idealism and passion. Romeo lives in the middle of a violent feud between his family and the Capulets, but he is not at all interested in violence. His only interest is love and he goes to extremes to prove the seriousness of his feelings. He secretly marries Juliet, the daughter of his father’s worst enemy, and he would rather die than live without his beloved. Guitar skills a plus. Seeking actors of all ethnicities.

JULIET
(16-22) The daughter of Capulet and Lady Capulet. A beautiful girl, Juliet begins the play as a naïve young woman who has thought little about love and marriage, but grows up quickly upon falling in love with Romeo, the son of her family’s great enemy. She is also a remarkable, exquisite thinker. Huge depth to her emotionally – but also a great sense of joy, love of life, and humor. Seeking actors of all ethnicities.

MERCUTIO
(24-32). Seeking male and female actors. He is unpredictable and potentially dangerous- with a joy and lust for life. He has a strange, unpredictable imagination - and it often goes to a dark place. Guitar skills a plus. Seeking actors of all ethnicities.

MASTER ACTOR
Seeking one male or female actor to play NURSE and FRIAR (early 40’s to early 60’s)

NURSE
She is very maternal. There is a crassness and bawdiness to her humor. She has been through life and seen it all. She loves to tease and shock people. As the play progresses, we see that there is a lot of fear underneath the mask of comedy we saw in the first half of the play.

FRIAR
There is something mysterious about him. He feels like a rebel in this world. He initially appears to be unafraid of the forbidden and uses his great wisdom to help innocents in love. However, he is completely afraid when he is faced with possibility of getting caught and is very aware of how responsible he is for all that happened. His awareness of that responsibility undoes him. Seeking actors of all ethnicities.
