Breakdown

Each actor must be facile with humor, and yet emotionally available. The demands of both roles allow the actors to stretch into a wide range of skills, both dramatic and comedic. There must be a great, compelling, and convincing fencing match between Rothko and Ken. The give and take between the two propels the play forward and carries us to its riveting climax.

Seeking:

ROTHKO
Male, 50’s, Caucasian. A leading abstract expressionist painter of the 20th Century. Intellectual, passionate, truthful, bullying, and impetuous. Rothko can be an intimidating man, and does not suffer fools easily. He carries a gravitas that is fueled by great belief, and yet before each of his public exhibitions he becomes sick, unable to rise from his bed for days, worried that critics will “tear apart his children and reveal him for the imposter that he is.” He is capable of great compassion and empathy, though equally capable of crushing another with a devastating phrase. He covers his doubts by requiring a reverence from those around him, but those doubts are consuming him. He needs an equal, someone he trusts, to combat him with the truth. He becomes a very complex father figure for Ken.

KEN
Male, Early 20’s, Caucasian. Very bright and willing to work hard. He is paying his dues and learning the ropes from the master so he may succeed himself. Both of Ken’s parents were murdered in a violent home burglary when he was a young boy, ensuring his need for a father figure. He’s sharp and intends to make his way in the world. One of the great joys of the play is discovering that all Ken has been absorbing from Rothko during his apprenticeship he intends to use on Rothko upon “graduation.” Ken learns through trial and error just how far he can push Rothko before provoking the consequences. He’s told that “The child must respect the father. Respect him, but kill him.” He does, and in his way, he will. By earning Rothko’s respect, Ken also earns his love.
