BREAKDOWN

Synopsis:
Dr. Noel Browne became Minister For Health in the Irish Coalition Government of 1948. He had no political experience but had a burning desire to eradicate the scourge of Tuberculosis that had killed much of his family. With his messianic drive he was well on his way to success when he introduced a Mother and Child Scheme that would have given free pre-natal care to Irish women and free health insurance to all children. However, he did not lay the groundwork with his party leader and ex-IRA Chief, Sean MacBride nor with Archbishop John Charles McQuaid, the autocratic leader of the Irish Church. Rebel in the Soul deals with the intense maneuvering of these three charismatic people and the ensuing political crisis that would change Irish life.

Roles:

Dr. Noel Browne, 35, intense, self-absorbed, compassionate, well-spoken, educated in a British Prep school and Trinity College Dublin, yet came from an impoverished Irish background.

Archbishop John Charles McQuaid, 55, quiet, charming, cultured, ruthless, obsessive-compulsive organizer and tactician, Clerical accent. Interested in people.

Sean MacBride, 47, Raised in Paris to be a “man of destiny” by his mother Maude Gonne, muse of WB Yeats, to the manor born, but could move effortlessly in all strata of society, great charisma, odd mixture of principle and pragmatism.

Phyllis Browne, 34, loyal, lovely, warm, strong, practical, good judge of people, protective of Browne’s reputation and place in history.

All four characters are well-read, cultured, stylish dressers, and from the upper tier of Irish post-war society. The actors will also play the various other minor characters including Browne’s mother and father, Physician, and hospital patients who make brief appearances.
